Background and Identification

Combination washing machines and dryers are meant to save space by combining the washer and dryer into one machine. Alternatively, there are also stacked models, which have the washer and dryer are vertically connected to take up less floor space. Combination washer dryers are also useful because they don’t require the user to remove the clothes from the washer and put them into the dryer. Instead, the drying cycle can be set to follow the washing cycle without any extra input from the user. This functionality is more convenient for people who don’t want to have to come back to the washer/dryer as often to remove and replace clothes and start the next washing or drying cycle.

Electric washing machines and dryers first began to appear in the early to mid 1900s. The first automatic washing machine was developed by Bendix Home Appliances in 1937. Later, Bendix also introduced the Duomatic in 1953, which was the first combination washing machine and dryer. Over time, more companies began to make combination washer dryers, and these machines became more advanced, so that their capabilities were comparable to a regular washer and dryer. Today, combination washer dryers are common whenever people want to save space or make their laundry day more convenient.
