Background and Identification

The Ford Mustang is an American automobile manufactured by Ford that has been in production since 1964. The Mustang is Ford’s longest-produced car nameplate and is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate as of 2018. The Mustang was designed and developed as a line of sporty coupes and convertibles originally based on the platform of the second generation North American Ford Falcon, a compact car. The Mustang was originally distinguished by its long hood and short deck when compared with other compact cars.

The 1965 Ford Mustang was the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Ford Model A. Over 400,000 Mustangs were sold within two year’s of the Mustang’s launch. Ford produced its 10-millionth Mustang vehicle in August 2018. The Ford Mustang had an effect on the designs of other coupe vehicles worldwide, including the Toyota Celica, Ford Capri, and Mercury Cougar.

Between 1965 and 2004, the Mustang shared common chassis with other Ford lines and remained a rear-wheel-drive vehicle during its production. Since 2005, Mustang has undergone two generations, each with a distinct chassis unique to the Mustang line. Since 1965, the multiple nameplates have been associated with the Mustang series, including Mach 1, GT, Cobra, Bullitt, and Boss 302/429.

Ford Mustang vehicles can be identified by the Mustang emblem, which depicts a galloping horse (or mustang).
