How to write functionToGenerateMD5hash for this code? I already have fileVideo and I need to send the corresponding md5 hash to the server by clicking on the button.

$("#someButton").click(function() {
var fr = new FileReader();
fr.onload = function(e) {
    string md5 = functionToGenerateMD5hash(e.target.result);
    // send md5 here
};
fr.readAsArrayBuffer(fileVideo);

Also, can you use this to generate a MD5 hash in Node.js?

If you don't want to use libraries or other things, you can use this native javascript approach:

var MD5 = function(d){var r = M(V(Y(X(d),8*d.length)));return r.toLowerCase()};function M(d){for(var _,m="0123456789ABCDEF",f="",r=0;r<d.length;r++)_=d.charCodeAt(r),f+=m.charAt(_>>>4&15)+m.charAt(15&_);return f}function X(d){for(var _=Array(d.length>>2),m=0;m<_.length;m++)_[m]=0;for(m=0;m<8*d.length;m+=8)_[m>>5]|=(255&d.charCodeAt(m/8))<<m%32;return _}function V(d){for(var _="",m=0;m<32*d.length;m+=8)_+=String.fromCharCode(d[m>>5]>>>m%32&255);return _}function Y(d,_){d[_>>5]|=128<<_%32,d[14+(_+64>>>9<<4)]=_;for(var m=1732584193,f=-271733879,r=-1732584194,i=271733878,n=0;n<d.length;n+=16){var h=m,t=f,g=r,e=i;f=md5_ii(f=md5_ii(f=md5_ii(f=md5_ii(f=md5_hh(f=md5_hh(f=md5_hh(f=md5_hh(f=md5_gg(f=md5_gg(f=md5_gg(f=md5_gg(f=md5_ff(f=md5_ff(f=md5_ff(f=md5_ff(f,r=md5_ff(r,i=md5_ff(i,m=md5_ff(m,f,r,i,d[n+0],7,-680876936),f,r,d[n+1],12,-389564586),m,f,d[n+2],17,606105819),i,m,d[n+3],22,-1044525330),r=md5_ff(r,i=md5_ff(i,m=md5_ff(m,f,r,i,d[n+4],7,-176418897),f,r,d[n+5],12,1200080426),m,f,d[n+6],17,-1473231341),i,m,d[n+7],22,-45705983),r=md5_ff(r,i=md5_ff(i,m=md5_ff(m,f,r,i,d[n+8],7,1770035416),f,r,d[n+9],12,-1958414417),m,f,d[n+10],17,-42063),i,m,d[n+11],22,-1990404162),r=md5_ff(r,i=md5_ff(i,m=md5_ff(m,f,r,i,d[n+12],7,1804603682),f,r,d[n+13],12,-40341101),m,f,d[n+14],17,-1502002290),i,m,d[n+15],22,1236535329),r=md5_gg(r,i=md5_gg(i,m=md5_gg(m,f,r,i,d[n+1],5,-165796510),f,r,d[n+6],9,-1069501632),m,f,d[n+11],14,643717713),i,m,d[n+0],20,-373897302),r=md5_gg(r,i=md5_gg(i,m=md5_gg(m,f,r,i,d[n+5],5,-701558691),f,r,d[n+10],9,38016083),m,f,d[n+15],14,-660478335),i,m,d[n+4],20,-405537848),r=md5_gg(r,i=md5_gg(i,m=md5_gg(m,f,r,i,d[n+9],5,568446438),f,r,d[n+14],9,-1019803690),m,f,d[n+3],14,-187363961),i,m,d[n+8],20,1163531501),r=md5_gg(r,i=md5_gg(i,m=md5_gg(m,f,r,i,d[n+13],5,-1444681467),f,r,d[n+2],9,-51403784),m,f,d[n+7],14,1735328473),i,m,d[n+12],20,-1926607734),r=md5_hh(r,i=md5_hh(i,m=md5_hh(m,f,r,i,d[n+5],4,-378558),f,r,d[n+8],11,-2022574463),m,f,d[n+11],16,1839030562),i,m,d[n+14],23,-35309556),r=md5_hh(r,i=md5_hh(i,m=md5_hh(m,f,r,i,d[n+1],4,-1530992060),f,r,d[n+4],11,1272893353),m,f,d[n+7],16,-155497632),i,m,d[n+10],23,-1094730640),r=md5_hh(r,i=md5_hh(i,m=md5_hh(m,f,r,i,d[n+13],4,681279174),f,r,d[n+0],11,-358537222),m,f,d[n+3],16,-722521979),i,m,d[n+6],23,76029189),r=md5_hh(r,i=md5_hh(i,m=md5_hh(m,f,r,i,d[n+9],4,-640364487),f,r,d[n+12],11,-421815835),m,f,d[n+15],16,530742520),i,m,d[n+2],23,-995338651),r=md5_ii(r,i=md5_ii(i,m=md5_ii(m,f,r,i,d[n+0],6,-198630844),f,r,d[n+7],10,1126891415),m,f,d[n+14],15,-1416354905),i,m,d[n+5],21,-57434055),r=md5_ii(r,i=md5_ii(i,m=md5_ii(m,f,r,i,d[n+12],6,1700485571),f,r,d[n+3],10,-1894986606),m,f,d[n+10],15,-1051523),i,m,d[n+1],21,-2054922799),r=md5_ii(r,i=md5_ii(i,m=md5_ii(m,f,r,i,d[n+8],6,1873313359),f,r,d[n+15],10,-30611744),m,f,d[n+6],15,-1560198380),i,m,d[n+13],21,1309151649),r=md5_ii(r,i=md5_ii(i,m=md5_ii(m,f,r,i,d[n+4],6,-145523070),f,r,d[n+11],10,-1120210379),m,f,d[n+2],15,718787259),i,m,d[n+9],21,-343485551),m=safe_add(m,h),f=safe_add(f,t),r=safe_add(r,g),i=safe_add(i,e)}return Array(m,f,r,i)}function md5_cmn(d,_,m,f,r,i){return safe_add(bit_rol(safe_add(safe_add(_,d),safe_add(f,i)),r),m)}function md5_ff(d,_,m,f,r,i,n){return md5_cmn(_&m|~_&f,d,_,r,i,n)}function md5_gg(d,_,m,f,r,i,n){return md5_cmn(_&f|m&~f,d,_,r,i,n)}function md5_hh(d,_,m,f,r,i,n){return md5_cmn(_^m^f,d,_,r,i,n)}function md5_ii(d,_,m,f,r,i,n){return md5_cmn(m^(_|~f),d,_,r,i,n)}function safe_add(d,_){var m=(65535&d)+(65535&_);return(d>>16)+(_>>16)+(m>>16)<<16|65535&m}function bit_rol(d,_){return d<<_|d>>>32-_}

/** NORMAL words**/
var value = 'test';

var result = MD5(value);

document.body.innerHTML = 'hash -  normal words: ' + result;

/** NON ENGLISH words**/
value = 'מבחן'

//unescape() can be deprecated for the new browser versions
result = MD5(unescape(encodeURIComponent(value)));

document.body.innerHTML += '<br><br>hash - non english words: ' + result;

For non english words you may need to use unescape() and the encodeURIComponent() methods.

CryptoJS is a crypto library which can generate md5 hash among others:

Usage with Script tag:

<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/crypto-js/4.0.0/core.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/crypto-js/3.1.9-1/md5.js"></script>
<script>
   var hash = CryptoJS.MD5("Message");
   alert(hash);
</script>

Alternatively with ES6:

npm install crypto-js

import MD5 from "crypto-js/md5";
console.log(MD5("Message").toString());

You can also use modular imports:

var MD5 = require("crypto-js/md5");
console.log(MD5("Message").toString());

You could use crypto-js.

I would also recommend using SHA256, rather than MD5.

To install crypto-js via NPM:

npm install crypto-js

Alternatively you can use a CDN and reference the JS file.

Then to display a MD5 and SHA256 hash, you can do the following:

<script type="text/javascript">
    var md5Hash = CryptoJS.MD5("Test");
    var sha256Hash = CryptoJS.SHA256("Test1");

    console.log(md5Hash.toString());
    console.log(sha256Hash.toString());
</script>

Working example located here, JSFiddle

There are also other JS functions that will generate an MD5 hash, outlined below.

Then simply use the MD5 function, as shown below:

alert(md5("Test string"));

    But these function work with string and i have a ArrayBuffer of big file(video). Also thank for recommendation but i need md5 not for password, just for file hash sum. – Taras Kravets Feb 07 '13 at 10:51
  • There are times when md5 is fine. For example, if you are trying to limit comment spam, have JS replace the CSRF token with md5sum of CSRF token. Bots that don't have a JS engine won't be able to. – Alice Wonder Apr 12 '19 at 12:52
  • it might be useful if you address the question asked in the title too, and add how to calculate an md5 hash for a file not necessarily on the file system e.g. a file you have the HTTP URL for – barlop Jul 20 '19 at 21:00
  • MD5 is unsecure. https://www.owasp.org/index.php/Guide_to_Cryptography#How_to_determine_if_you_are_vulnerable and https://www.bentasker.co.uk/blog/security/201-why-you-should-be-asking-how-your-passwords-are-stored – Kiquenet Oct 16 '20 at 08:49
  • @Kiquenet yes, which is why I recommended SHA256 and provided an example. – Darren Nov 12 '20 at 12:21

    Not everything has to be "secure", guys. All the original question seeks to accomplish is to create a unique hash out of a file - why assume security is even a consideration? What if the goal is to simply optimize identification of one file from another... put some of the hashing load on the client. Seems like a perfectly valid use of MD5 to me. – jordancpaul Jul 08 '21 at 18:12

    @jordancpaul - I provided an answer for MD5 and also a secure alternative utilising SHA256. Whilst I answered the OP’s original question with an MD5 example, recommending a more secure solution and also providing an example is good practice. Hopefully it helps future readers of this question. Wether the OP has considered security or not, they can decide for themselves which hashing algorithm is the best solution for their problem based on the examples in the answer. – Darren Jul 28 '21 at 16:30

As a contemporary alternative, there is a standard now for client side cryptography. This has the advantage of being optimised by the browser itself.

Taken from the example in the documentation:

async function sha256(message) {
    // encode as UTF-8
    const msgBuffer = new TextEncoder().encode(message);

    // hash the message
    const hashBuffer = await crypto.subtle.digest('SHA-256', msgBuffer);

    // convert ArrayBuffer to Array
    const hashArray = Array.from(new Uint8Array(hashBuffer));

    // convert bytes to hex string
    const hashHex = hashArray.map(b => ('00' + b.toString(16)).slice(-2)).join('');
    return hashHex;
}

sha256('abc').then(hash => console.log(hash));

(async function() {
    const hash = await sha256('abc');
}());

MD5 is likely unsupported, however the likes of SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 are.

And those will likely be able to be calculated server side also.

Here's some documentation on usage: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/SubtleCrypto/digest

And cross browser compatibility: https://caniuse.com/#feat=cryptography

    This is the correct answer now (and md5 is not secure anymore). – Gabor Lengyel Dec 22 '18 at 12:45
  • I wanted to use this API so much, but I use virtual hosts (like http://my.project.test/) instead of plain "http://localhost/". It's not considered a secure context, so it doesn't work. Is there a solution for this other than using https on a development system? – crimson_king Feb 24 '21 at 17:40
  • It's possible to create self signed certificates to use locally and thus have https://my.project.test, I'd suggest researching that direction. – Alex KeySmith Feb 25 '21 at 11:20

    To use the SubtleCrypto api you need to be in a secure context, a domain ending in .localhost is secure for when you don't need https. [MDN Secure_Contexts](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Security/Secure_Contexts) – Sherbrow May 06 '21 at 16:44
  • actually MD5 isn't cryptography, It's a hash, that is VERY different. Hashes ar used in crypto but they aren't cryptographies themselves. – Marco Nov 28 '22 at 20:44
  • Very true, it was a long time I posted this, but if I recall I probably said cryptography as it's in the Web Crypto API. SHA-2 in itself is a cryptographic hash function. – Alex KeySmith Dec 01 '22 at 15:15

2023 update

This is a popular thread still being hit by searches and most of the top answers are not relevant nowadays.

NodeJS (V8 actually) provides a native hashing implementation via crypto module.

Don't use any own/3rd/2nd party libraries anymore.

Do:

  • obtain content that you'd like to hash, see below
  • create, each time, a hash function
  • do the hash
Text (simplified example)
import { createHash } from 'node:crypto';

function hashText(content, algo = 'md5') {
  const hashFunc = createHash(algo);   // you can also sha256, sha512 etc
  hashFunc.update(content);
  return hashFunc.digest('hex'); // will return hash, formatted to HEX
}
File (streaming example)
import { createHash } from 'node:crypto';
import { createReadStream } from 'node:fs';

async function hashFile(path, algo = 'md5') {
  const hashFunc = createHash(algo);   // you can also sha256, sha512 etc

  const contentStream = createReadStream(path);
  const updateDone = new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
    contentStream.on('data', (data) => hashFunc.update(data));
    contentStream.on('close', resolve);
    contentStream.on('error', reject);
  });

  await updateDone;
  return hashFunc.digest('hex'); // will return hash, formatted to HEX
}

  • If I have a file buffer in memory, should I use the first (Text) approach? – Renan Coelho Jun 27 '23 at 11:31
  • 1
    @RenanCoelho as per [this doc](https://nodejs.org/api/crypto.html#hashupdatedata-inputencoding) `update` function, which is the relevant part for your question, might take string, buffer, typed array etc, so you should be able to use the first approach passing the buffer in. – GullerYA Jun 28 '23 at 19:59
  • It worked. Thanks! – Renan Coelho Jun 29 '23 at 15:35

The function will return an uppercase 32-character string like 098F6BCD4621D373CADE4E832627B4F6.

For simple alphanumeric strings, you can run it like this:

md5('test')

If you need full unicode support, you can call unescape and encodeURIComponent on the string before passing it:

md5(unescape(encodeURIComponent('')))

    While this code snippet may solve the problem, it doesn't explain why or how it answers the question. Please [include an explanation for your code](//meta.stackexchange.com/q/114762/269535), as that really helps to improve the quality of your post. Remember that you are answering the question for readers in the future, and those people might not know the reasons for your code suggestion. – Luca Kiebel Jan 31 '22 at 09:54

You can use a lightweight library pure-md5. Just a 4.7kb.

$("#file-dialog").change(function() {
  handleFiles(this.files);
});

function handleFiles(files) {
  for (var index = 0; index < files.length; index++) {
    var file = files[index];
    var fileReader = new FileReader();
    fileReader.onload = function(e) {
      $('body').append(`
        <div style="margin-top: 2rem;">
          <span>${file.name}: </span>
          <span>${(md5(e.target.result))}</span>
        </div>
      `);
    }

    fileReader.readAsText(file, 'utf-8');
  }

}
body {
  font-family: sans-serif;
}
<script src="https://unpkg.com/pure-md5@0.1.9/lib/index.js"></script>
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<input type="file" id="file-dialog" multiple="true" accept="image/*">

You can use crypto-js.

To use crypto-js, you need to load core.js then md5.js .

A list of URLs are here https://cdnjs.com/libraries/crypto-js

cryptojs is also available in zip form here https://code.google.com/archive/p/crypto-js/downloads

There is an answer from answerer 'amal' in 2013, that is similar to this but a)his link to md5.js no longer works b)he didn't load core.js beforehand, which is necessary.

<html>
  <head>

    <script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/crypto-js/3.1.2/components/core.js"></script>
    <script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/crypto-js/3.1.2/rollups/md5.js"></script>

  <script>
     var hash = CryptoJS.MD5("Message");
     console.log(hash);
  </script>

  </head>
  <body>

  </body>
</html>

  • I should really include the code that gets the file..I have it somewhere I plan to add it. Also, bear in mind that even then it could only get the file returned from the http request which is often a cached file. (though in some web browsers you can tell them to disable cache.. in chrome a simple tick of a box in the inspector, though of course most users won't have that ticked) – barlop Sep 06 '19 at 09:24
