I have an application that I'm using spring boot and postgres. I'm getting this error when I try to create a user.

When I run this query on my database, I get the same error:

select * from APP_USER

ERROR: relation "app_user" does not exist
LINE 1: select * from APP_USER
                      ^
********** Error **********

ERROR: relation "app_user" does not exist
SQL state: 42P01

But if I change that to:

select * from "APP_USER"

It works.

How can I configure that on my spring boot app?

dependencies in pom.xml:

    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
        <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-web</artifactId>

application.properties:

spring.datasource.driverClassName=org.postgresql.Driver
spring.datasource.url=jdbc:postgresql://localhost:5432/boek
spring.datasource.username=postgres
spring.datasource.password=ABCD123$

spring.jpa.database-platform=org.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQLDialect
spring.jpa.generate-ddl=false

#spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=create
spring.jpa.show-sql=true

My entity:

@Entity
@Table(name = "APP_USER")
public class User implements Serializable {

    private static final long serialVersionUID = -1152779434213289790L;

    @Id
    @Column(name="ID", nullable = false, updatable = false)
    @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.AUTO)
    private long id;

    @Column(name="NAME", nullable = false)
    private String name;

    @Column(name="USER_NAME", nullable = false, unique = true)
    private String username;

    @Column(name="PASSWORD", nullable = false)
    private String password;

    @Column(name="EMAIL", nullable = false, unique = true)
    private String email;

    @Column(name="ROLE", nullable = false)
    private RoleEnum role;

I'm calling this action from a form:

<form role="form" action="#" th:action="@{/user/create}" th:object="${userDTO}" method="post">

and this is my controller:

@RequestMapping(value = "/user/create", method = RequestMethod.POST)
    public String handleUserCreateForm(@Valid @ModelAttribute("form") UserDTO form, BindingResult bindingResult) {
        if (bindingResult.hasErrors()) {
            return "user_create";
        }
        try {
            userService.create(form);
        } catch (DataIntegrityViolationException e) {
            bindingResult.reject("email.exists", "Email already exists");
            return "user_create";
        }
        return "redirect:/users";
    }

The validator that cath the error:

private void validateEmail(Errors errors, UserDTO form) {
        if (userService.getUserByEmail(form.getEmail()).isPresent()) {
            errors.reject("email.exists", "User with this email already exists");
        }
    }

UserServiceImpl (@Service):

@Override
    public Optional<User> getUserByEmail(String email) {
        return userRepository.findOneByEmail(email);
    }

And the repository is a CrudRepository interface, and have no implementation:

@Repository
public interface UserRepository extends CrudRepository<User, Serializable> {

    Optional<User> findOneByEmail(String email);
}

And debuging the validator I could get this stack:

  • Could you post your implementation of "getUserByEmail"? I suspect the way you query the EntityManager (via JPA) behind this error. – MWiesner Jul 19 '15 at 23:08
  • `I'm getting this error when I try to create a user.` You are selecting from a *table*, how is this related to "creating a user"? Either way: use [legal, lower-case, unquoted identifiers](http://stackoverflow.com/a/20880247/939860) in Postgres and save yourself the trouble. – Erwin Brandstetter Jul 20 '15 at 00:10
  • @ErwinBrandstetter, I was just trying to explain the whole situation. off course it didn't work as well. – Rafael Lima Jul 20 '15 at 01:06

PostgreSQL is following the SQL standard and in that case that means that identifiers (table names, column names, etc) are forced to lowercase, except when they are quoted. So when you create a table like this:

CREATE TABLE APP_USER ...

you actually get a table app_user. You apparently did:

CREATE TABLE "APP_USER" ...

and then you get a table "APP_USER".

In Spring, you specify a regular string for the table name, in capital letters, but that gets spliced into a query to the PostgreSQL server without quotes. You can check this by reading the PostgreSQL log files: it should show the query that Spring generated followed by the error at the top of your message.

Since you have very little control over how Spring constructs queries from entities, you are better off using SQL-standard lower-case identifiers.

  • It works. I create a new table with a lowercase name and fields, just in case. Just as an information: I've created the table in PG Admin. I only put the names in uppercase. I didn't put any ". Thanks! – Rafael Lima Jul 20 '15 at 01:42

    Actually Postgres is *not* following the SQL standard. Because the SQL standard requires that un-quoted identifiers are forced to **upper** case. –  Jul 20 '15 at 07:22

Give schema name also along with table name. It solved the issue for me.

@Entity
@Table(name = "APP_USER",schema="xxxxx")

public class User implements Serializable {

    private static final long serialVersionUID = -1152779434213289790L;

    @Id
    @Column(name="ID", nullable = false, updatable = false)
    @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.AUTO)
    private long id;

    @Column(name="NAME", nullable = false)
    private String name;

    @Column(name="USER_NAME", nullable = false, unique = true)
    private String username;

    @Column(name="PASSWORD", nullable = false)
    private String password;

    @Column(name="EMAIL", nullable = false, unique = true)
    private String email;

    @Column(name="ROLE", nullable = false)
    private RoleEnum role;

For me changing spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto to the following to create and drop the scheme at each test run solved the issue.

spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=create-drop

Changing spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto to below to create and drop schema on every test run solves the problem but it constantly recreates table.

spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=create-drop

Instead of the top one, I used the bottom one, and the continuous table was not created and my error was resolved. The choice is yours.

spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto= update

  • Yes the other one `spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto: update` solves the problem, though the schema attribute in the @Table is not mentioned. This config helped in case of using testcontainers for postgresql – Kartik Narayana Maringanti Mar 05 '23 at 14:56

It might be also caused missing default schema declaration in hibernate config.

    Properties jpaProperties = new Properties();

    ..

    jpaProperties.put("hibernate.default_schema", "my_default_schema");
    entityManagerFactoryBean.setJpaProperties(jpaProperties);

Adding Schema information in @Table annotation worked for me.

@Table(name = "table_name", schema = "schema_name")

This could also happen if your mapping file is not defined properly in jpa configuration file. In my case, there was a new line character before (end tag where mapping file is defined) in jpa configuration.

  • In JPA configuration mapping the entry was like META-INF/testMapping.xml The new line character was there between testMapping.xml and . Due to this the mapping was not being read and it also not throwing any error. – Tushar Patel Nov 23 '16 at 03:59

You should check permissions from your app database login to your scheme.

There were not permissions to my scheme and I had the same problem.

In your application configuration, ensure that your datasource.url links to the right database name.

I changed a setting in application.yaml and it resolved, as described in an answer here.

Old

spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto= create-drop

new

spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto= update

Relation does not exist, Spring Boot postgresql

You can add a schema name to your connection-url, which saves you from repeating that schema in each Hibernate Entity.

For example, to use schema 'public':

spring:
  datasource:
    url: jdbc:postgresql://localhost:5432/some_database?currentSchema=public
    username: some_user_name
    password: some_password
  jpa:
    database-platform: org.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQLDialect
