I have a web service published on a machine and I can use it with this address: (http://computer-name/) from any device connected by Wi-Fi to this machine.

The problem is that with an iPhone I can only access the webservice with the IP address and not with the computer name (http://computer-name/).

So, does anyone know where this problem comes from? Or is there a solution so that I can use the name of the computer to access the web service on an iPhone without using the IP address? Thanks.

How are the other devices resolving the name? Is it with Bonjour? DNS? NetBIOS? Is the iPhone connected to the same Wi-Fi network? – Jim May 21 '12 at 23:47
  • I am assuming this is with a local router, if so how does the iPhone connect to the router? Does it use DHCP? What are the DNS servers that it is using? – Michael Boselowitz May 21 '12 at 23:47

Actually, it's an ad-hoc network and all devices connected to this network can use the webservice with the computer name, except iPhone. – Ouadie May 22 '12 at 12:02
  • add it to your iphone host file http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2028544/does-hosts-file-exist-on-the-iphone-how-to-change-it – Chris May 22 '12 at 13:41
  • Thank you, but I can't use this solution, because I want that web service works with any iPhone connected to the ad-hoc network, not only one. – Ouadie May 22 '12 at 23:38
