I have a grails app running on tomcat that seems to be leaking class loaders and after about 2 weeks of operation it throws OOME. I am however unable to figure out what is root cause of the issue. Any help on how to tackle this will be highly appreciated.

I wonder if the executor plugin is the culprit due to the high number of concurrentHashMap entries. I checked out the number of instances for my own classes using jmap at different times and they don't seem to be increasing. How do I go about resolving this, even if you can provide me an "approach to tackle" this issue, it will be great.

    Make sure that it's not a famous 'tomcat permgen space' error, that happens after redeploying of a application – Igor Artamonov Aug 26 '12 at 19:51
  • There is no such thing as "famous 'tomcat permgen space' error". Every and one permgen oom is due to bug in application or one of it's library. – Nikem Aug 27 '12 at 12:52
  • I have shutdown and restart tomcat along with application and still this happens. So I guess this one can be ruled out. – Abe Aug 27 '12 at 15:04

It may be worth to try Plumbr. It finds permgen leaks now as well, and this functionality is free for the time being.

If you feel that it is a plugin issue, how difficult is it to remove the plugin and test?

  • It is an in production app. So removing plugin would be kind of hard. But I guess I could remove it locally and try it out. – Abe Aug 27 '12 at 15:05
