When I went to open Eclipse, it had worked an hour before, it froze at launch and gave the error: "An error has occurred. See the log file". See the log file below.

Although some of this information appears in the log,

OS: Mac OSX 10.7.5

Eclipse: Eclipse IDE for C/C++ Developers 3.8

Additionally, I have tried launching the Eclipse executable with -clean, as well as deleting various files in the .metadata folder. Lots of solutions on the internet, none have worked so far.

Deleting workspace/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.e4.workbench/workbench.xmi solved the problem.

  • Worded for me too. OS: Mac OSX 10.8.4 Eclipse Java EE IDE for Web Developers. Version: Juno Service Release 2 Build id: 20130225-0426 – AntonioOtero Aug 21 '13 at 21:17

My eclipse was just showing the splash screen and closing abruptly. This solution saved my day! – bangdel Oct 11 '13 at 18:25
  • Worked for me too: Aptana Studio 3, Windows 7. But location was `workspace/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.ui.workbench/workbench.xmi` – Gottlieb Notschnabel Nov 05 '13 at 12:52

This file is worth backing up along with eclipse exported preferences, so it will be easy to restore your workbench when it goes kaboom (which is too common). – Amir Uval Jun 11 '14 at 10:03
  • @uval +1 for the backup. I played around with simply deleting that file, but didn't like the resulting damage. Then I remembered that I recently crossed "implement nightly incremental backups" off my "round tuit" list. – John Auld Aug 14 '14 at 05:39
  • Still working. OS: Deepin 15.9.1 (Linux, Debian based) – Inmer Feb 11 '19 at 14:47

Problem also resolved by opening from the CLI with the option -clearPersistedState Worked for me.

if you have this same problem with Flash Builder, remove:

.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.ui.workbench\workbench.xml

  • sorry for trying to help... the file to be removed for flash builder is in other directory so thought this could be useful to add – Frank Oct 06 '14 at 11:17
  • oh sorry, i didn't notice it was a different path. :) gonna delete my first comment – Vasile Surdu Oct 07 '14 at 10:53
