I have following regex for email validation 

^([A-Za-z0-9])+([\-|_|\.]?)+([A-Za-z0-9])+@([A-Za-z0-9]*\.?[A-Za-z]*\.[A-Za-z]{2,4})$

It is working for all expected cases, except for 1:

After @, it should accept anything like below: 

gmail.com  
yahoo.co.uk

This is working fine.

Before @, it should accept anything like below: 

name  
name.name   
name_name  
name-name

It works fine for all above cases does not fail anywhere in negative test scenarios except below: 

name..name

or 

name_.-name

That is, when written in continuity, it allows me to write those characters any number of time.

My requirement is it should allow only one of these (-._) and they can occur only once.
Expression : [.|_|\-]?

But I does not work. Any fix for it?

Don't bother using a regular expression; the range of valid email addresses is huge and even the best regular expressions miss some of them. If you want to validate an email then talk to the domain's mailserver and ask it if the address is valid.

To give you an idea, here's a regex that catches most valid email addresses:

  • Yes, That is where it fails. I am doing clent side validation for some reason. If it goes through, the mailmessage.to.add(email) wont fail. – BFry Feb 01 '13 at 14:24

I guess you should remove the + after the second group.

This:

^([A-Za-z0-9])+([\-|_|\.]?)+([A-Za-z0-9])+@([A-Za-z0-9]*\.?[A-Za-z]*\.[A-Za-z]{2,4})$

Should be this:

^([A-Za-z0-9])+([\-|_|\.]?)([A-Za-z0-9])+@([A-Za-z0-9]*\.?[A-Za-z]*\.[A-Za-z]{2,4})$

If you want to make this delimiter mandatory, you also have to remove the question mark after that character group and do it like this:

^([A-Za-z0-9])+([\-|_|\.])([A-Za-z0-9])+@([A-Za-z0-9]*\.?[A-Za-z]*\.[A-Za-z]{2,4})$

    The last one makes it mandatory. The second one makes them optional due to the question mark after the character group. You could also write it like this to make that more explicit: `^([A-Za-z0-9])+([\-|_|\.])?([A-Za-z0-9])+@([A-Za-z0-9]*\.?[A-Za-z]*\.[A-Za-z]{2,4})$` Then it might appear, but if it appears, it can't be more than one of the given characters. However, if there's no reason to write a custom expression I'd also use an existing one. Besides it really depends on the volume of mails you want to send. Mailservers don't like it if you try to send mails to non-existant mailboxes ;) – Henry Feb 01 '13 at 14:27

I didn't read up the DNS specification but I guess this should be true for all domains (maybe except for domains containing UTF-8 characters). – Henry Feb 01 '13 at 14:39

    I'd also strongly suggest using an existing pattern, as this one doesn't cover quite some cases. However, this way it would be working, although a lot of cases are probably not covered (there are TLDs having more than 4 characters I think): ^([A-Za-z0-9])+([\-|_|\.])?([A-Za-z0-9]*)@([A-Za-z0-9]{2,})(\.[A-Za-z0-9]{2,})*?\.[A-Za-z]{2,4}$ – Henry Feb 01 '13 at 15:06

  • Sorry for that. I was checking it in an regex evaluator but I noticed, that there was something wrong with the last 6 or 7 characters of that expression. You might want to delete them and type them manually. That's what I did. I just checked again for abc@gmail.com with this expression and it passed (in SharpDevelops regex toolkit): ^([A-Za-z0-9])+([\-|_|\.])?([A-Za-z0-9]*)@([A-Za-z0-9]{2,})(\.[A-Za-z0-9]{2,})*?\.[A-Za-z]{2,4}$ – Henry Feb 01 '13 at 15:53
