I'm trying to set a custom entry point by passing the option -e to the linker but the command fails. What is wrong?

The function '_start' from crt1.o is the actual entry point, not 'main'.

You can try –nostdlib option, then test will be successfully linked, but it will crash at runtime. This happens because сompiled function 'test' has 'retq' instruction at the end. It tries to pop return address from the stack, but there is no return address, which leads to segfault.

You need to write a linker script to change the entry point. all nostdlib will do is require that you have _start() in your code instead of main and it won't include glibc initialization code.
