This is the regex to validate email address in javascript,I'm not sure if I can just use it directly in PHP:

/^((([a-z]|\d|[!#\$%&'\*\+\-/=\?\^_`{\|}~]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])+(\.([a-z]|\d|[!#\$%&'\*\+\-/=\?\^_`{\|}~]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])+)*)|((\x22)((((\x20|\x09)*(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(([\x01-\x08\x0b\x0c\x0e-\x1f\x7f]|\x21|[\x23-\x5b]|[\x5d-\x7e]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(\\([\x01-\x09\x0b\x0c\x0d-\x7f]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯]))))*(((\x20|\x09)*(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(\x22)))@((([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])([a-z]|\d|-|\.|_|~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])*([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])))\.)+(([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])([a-z]|\d|-|\.|_|~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])*([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])))\.?$/i

    Your first problem is attempting to validate email addresses with a regex: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/201323/what-is-the-best-regular-expression-for-validating-email-addresses/201378#201378 – Frank Farmer Feb 09 '10 at 06:28

This is the correct email validation regex (according to the standard):

  • No,I'm not gonna use another one if there is no difference. – user198729 Feb 09 '10 at 05:57
  • Well ... this one is the 'correct' one, according to the peoples who say what email addresses are valid. I don't really care which ones you use, as long as you don't really care about being 'incorrect'. – Tyler Carter Feb 09 '10 at 05:58

    There is a difference. The one you are using does not validate against any email conforming to RFC822... while this one does. If I could up-vote this answer twice I would. – sberry Feb 09 '10 at 06:00

    and how does this serve as an answer to the question? – echo Feb 09 '10 at 06:08

    This serves as a correction to his Regex. It is too long for a comment, so I provided it as an answer. Considering other answers also show that his regex can't be used in PHP, this might also serve as a PHP-friendly regex. – Tyler Carter Feb 09 '10 at 06:10
  • From http://www.regular-expressions.info: The reason you shouldn't use this regex is that it only checks the basic syntax of email addresses. john@aol.com.nospam would be considered a valid email address according to RFC 2822. Obviously, this email address won't work, since there's no "nospam" top-level domain. It also doesn't guarantee your email software will be able to handle it. Not all applications support the syntax using double quotes or square brackets. In fact, RFC 2822 itself marks the notation using square brackets as obsolete. – Tim Pietzcker Feb 09 '10 at 07:52

Here are a couple of links that might interest you :

They should help you identifying a couple of differences ; but as preg_* in PHP (you definitely should be using preg_*, and not ereg) and Javascript regexes are based on Perl, the differences should not be too important...

Edit after the comment : in this precise case, if you just try using your regex in PHP, you'll have this kind of code :

$str = 'mail@example.com';
$result = preg_match('/^((([a-z]|\d|[!#\$%&\'\*\+\-/=\?\^_`{\|}~]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])+(\.([a-z]|\d|[!#\$%&\'\*\+\-/=\?\^_`{\|}~]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])+)*)|((\x22)((((\x20|\x09)*(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(([\x01-\x08\x0b\x0c\x0e-\x1f\x7f]|\x21|[\x23-\x5b]|[\x5d-\x7e]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(\\([\x01-\x09\x0b\x0c\x0d-\x7f]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯]))))*(((\x20|\x09)*(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(\x22)))@((([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])([a-z]|\d|-|\.|_|~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])*([a-z]|\d|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])))\.)+(([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])|(([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])([a-z]|\d|-|\.|_|~|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])*([a-z]|[ -퟿豈-﷏ﷰ-￯])))\.?$/i', $str);

And executing it will give you this message :

Warning: preg_match(): Compilation failed: PCRE does not support \L, \l, \N, \U, or \u at offset 45 ...

Which is a good indication that no, your regex will not work out of the box in PHP.

I used RegexBuddy to convert your regex from JavaScript to PHP.

This is the result:

/^((([a-z]|\d|[!#$%&\'*+\-/=?\^_`{|}~]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])+(\.([a-z]|\d|[!#$%&\'*+\-/=?\^_`{|}~]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])+)*)|((\x22)((((\x20|\x09)*(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(([\x01-\x08\x0b\x0c\x0e-\x1f\x7f]|\x21|[\x23-\x5b]|[\x5d-\x7e]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])|(\\\\([\x01-\x09\x0b\x0c\x0d-\x7f]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}]))))*(((\x20|\x09)*(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(\x22)))@((([a-z]|\d|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])|(([a-z]|\d|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])([a-z]|\d|-|\.|_|~|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])*([a-z]|\d|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])))\.)+(([a-z]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])|(([a-z]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])([a-z]|\d|-|\.|_|~|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])*([a-z]|[\x{00A0}-\x{D7FF}\x{F900}-\x{FDCF}\x{FDF0}-\x{FFEF}])))\.?$/iu

I'm very interested whether it works :)

However, as for really using this, I urge you to consider reading this article (by the author of RegexBuddy), especially the section "Trade-Offs in Validating Email Addresses", explaining why a simpler regex probably makes more sense - in the end, you can never know if a mail address is valid before you have successfully sent mail to it (and received a confirmation).

Looks like your regular expression contains some meta characters that PHP's flavor of regular expression doesn't understand. When I tried to use your regex in some test code I got a warning:

Warning: preg_match(): Compilation failed: PCRE does not support \L, \l, \N, \U, or \u at offset 44 in /path/to/file.php on line 3

So the answer to your question is no, you cannot use that regular expression directly in PHP.
