The method "getResult()" is causing this error when I'm trying to set the values input on the form to the arrays I've created. It keeps giving me a null error, but I don't know why. I feel like I'm using the wrong method to change the values, but I'm not sure where else I can do this within a bean.

    From this code social will be null. However you will have to break out the debugger to find out why it is null though. This code looks fine. – BevynQ Mar 25 '14 at 03:22
  • Well, it keeps returning null. I initialized another private variable to test and see if it was setting a value, but it kept returning null. I've tried debugging for a while now, which is why I tried coming here. :/ – user3331286 Mar 25 '14 at 03:26

Try initializing your three String varialbes -- SSN, age, and income -- to "null", i.e. private string SSN = null;. In some instances, I have found that there actually is a difference in Java between not initializing an Object at all and initializing an Object as null.

Either SSN or social[records] are null at that assignment point.

social

Test whether social is null before the assignment - see if you get an error.

Try initializing social[records] to a value, and then retrieving it - see if you get the null error there.

SSN

The code looks good - that is, it looks good given some very basic assumptions. So, time to challenge those assumptions:

  • are you running in a multi-threaded environment? add log messages to your setters for each object. also add a log message before the assignment, showing the values of all the relevant variables. session related shenanigans fit under this category. if things don't clear up, keep adding log messages throughout until you can trace the entire execution chain.
  • do you have code that gets injected along the way? @ManagedBean opens up the door to some fairly complex interactions, including having hidden code execute during assignment, which is the true source of the null reference (say, for example, if you have code injected that, on assignment, attempts to persist/update data in a data store - code which then somehow fails). Try writing a simple test method, which loops over the 10 locations in your array and keeps assigning values to them, randomly. Test storing extra long values, and strange looking strings, too.
