C compile error: ld returned 1 exit status

Question

I'm using Ubuntu for the first time and I'm trying to run a hello world C program from the terminal. I saved the test.c file on my desktop and I typed

user@lemonheads:~/Desktop$ gcc test.c

into the terminal and got this error message

The C program I have as test.c is

/* Hello World program */

#include<stdio.h>

int main()
{
    printf("Hello World\n");
    return 0;

}

I've no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Is that exactly what you're typing? [This thread](http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10056724/linking-error-using-gcc-in-ubuntu-11-10?rq=1) has the same error messages but it was because he gave a wrong commandline to gcc — M.M, Sep 05 '14 at 03:20
