I need OpenCV3.0 since it supports some new functions which I need. I used the following code for installation (I had successfully installed OpenCV 2.4.9 using this code. But for OpenCV 3.0, while doing the cmake section, some error pops up due to mismatch of MD5 checksum)

mkdir OpenCV
cd OpenCV
echo "Removing any pre-installed ffmpeg and x264"
sudo apt-get -qq remove ffmpeg x264 libx264-dev
echo "Installing Dependenices"
sudo apt-get -qq install libopencv-dev build-essential checkinstall cmake pkg-config yasm libjpeg-dev libjasper-dev libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libswscale-dev libdc1394-22-dev libxine-dev libgstreamer0.10-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev libv4l-dev python-dev python-numpy libtbb-dev libqt4-dev libgtk2.0-dev libfaac-dev libmp3lame-dev libopencore-amrnb-dev libopencore-amrwb-dev libtheora-dev libvorbis-dev libxvidcore-dev x264 v4l-utils ffmpeg
echo "Installing OpenCV" $version
unzip OpenCV-3.0.zip #i manually installed opencv3.0 zipfile for linux from https://github.com/Itseez/opencv/archive/3.0.0-alpha.zip
cd opencv-3.0.0-alpha
mkdir build
cd build
cmake -D CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=RELEASE -D CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr/local -D WITH_TBB=ON -D BUILD_NEW_PYTHON_SUPPORT=ON -D WITH_V4L=ON -D INSTALL_C_EXAMPLES=ON -D INSTALL_PYTHON_EXAMPLES=ON -D BUILD_EXAMPLES=ON -D WITH_QT=ON -D WITH_OPENGL=ON ..
make -j2
sudo checkinstall
sudo sh -c 'echo "/usr/local/lib" > /etc/ld.so.conf.d/opencv.conf'
sudo ldconfig
echo "OpenCV 3.0 ready to be used"

When I execute the cmake command, I encounter errors. The output is shown below:

clive@clive-Aspire-4755:~/OpenCV/opencv-3.0.0-alpha/build$ cmake -D WITH_TBB=ON -D BUILD_NEW_PYTHON_SUPPORT=ON -D WITH_V4L=ON -D INSTALL_C_EXAMPLES=ON -D INSTALL_PYTHON_EXAMPLES=ON -D BUILD_EXAMPLES=ON -D WITH_QT=ON -D WITH_OPENGL=ON ..

Why are the checksums different? Is it because OpenCV3.0 needs another version of ippicv? I understand that the error comes while downloading ippicv_linux_20140513.tgz (in the 3rd party, ippicv folder).

Can someone help me out here? Any help would be appreciated!

PS. I want to use OpenCV3.0 with Python. OpenCV2.4.9 was working well until I tried to remove it. I actually deleted every file with the name "opencv" from my system. I didn't know how to uninstall it the proper way.

yea, bummer (same problem for win, too, btw) .since you're mainly interested in using python, try `cmake -DWITH_IPP=OFF` and make cmake skip the broken ipp download – berak Sep 08 '14 at 14:58
  • It looks like you need to install Qt5. – Mike Ounsworth Sep 08 '14 at 14:59
  • @Mike Ounsworth how do i install Qt5? – Clive Sep 08 '14 at 15:10
  • Which operating system are you using? On my Ubuntu 14.04 `sudo apt-get install qt5-default` looks promising. – Mike Ounsworth Sep 08 '14 at 15:13
  • @MikeOunsworth I am using Ubuntu 12.04..will try the code you mentioned after a while and let you know if it worked. Right now I am updating Ubuntu. I downloaded the ippicv_linux_20140513.tgz file manually. Where do I extract that to? Should I just extract its contents into the ippicv folder? The tgz file consists of an ippicv_lnx folder which has the following folders inside it: lib, include, licence and the file readme.htm update : No, sudo apt-get install qt5-default did not work. it says E:Unable to locate package qt5-default – Clive Sep 08 '14 at 15:59
  • That's beyond me, I have no idea what ippicv is. I always just install opencv from the package manager. – Mike Ounsworth Sep 08 '14 at 16:00
  • problem solved. I added -D WITH_IPP=OFF to the end of the cmake code. Thanks berak and Mike Ounsworth for your help. Although I still haven't found out how to install Qt5. – Clive Sep 08 '14 at 16:13
  • Well I was able to install OpenCV 3.0 Successfully. But when I try to execute the code for feature matching (from the opencv python docs), it says Traceback (most recent call last): File "feature_matching.py", line 11, in sift = cv2.SIFT() AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'SIFT' – Clive Sep 08 '14 at 16:53
  • also, everytime I execute an opencv program i get the error Failed to load OpenCL runtime. Although the output shows. Still no luck with SIFT.. – Clive Sep 08 '14 at 17:18
  • I'm having the same problem, but on **windows 7**, how can I add the manually downloaded **ipp** package so the `CMake gui` does not try to download it (and fail)? – Elod Apr 17 '15 at 10:59

Just follow the following procedure for Ubuntu 14.04

STEP 1 :-

To install the dependencies required for OpenCV, just run the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libopencv-dev build-essential cmake git libgtk2.0-dev pkg-config python-dev python-numpy libdc1394-22 libdc1394-22-dev libjpeg-dev libpng12-dev libtiff4-dev libjasper-dev libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libswscale-dev libxine-dev libgstreamer0.10-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev libv4l-dev libtbb-dev libqt4-dev libfaac-dev libmp3lame-dev libopencore-amrnb-dev libopencore-amrwb-dev libtheora-dev libvorbis-dev libxvidcore-dev x264 v4l-utils unzip

STEP 2 :-

Download the latest version of OpenCV

wget https://github.com/Itseez/opencv/archive/3.0.0-alpha.zip
unzip opencv-3.0.0-alpha.zip

STEP 3:-

Install Open CV

cd opencv-3.0.0-alpha
mkdir build
cd build
cmake -D CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=RELEASE -D CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr/local -D WITH_TBB=ON -D BUILD_NEW_PYTHON_SUPPORT=ON -D WITH_V4L=ON -D WITH_QT=ON -D WITH_OPENGL=ON ..

Note : If you get the hash mismatch error, then download the file ippicv_linux_20140513.tgz manually from sourceforge

After downloading the file extract the contents to the ippicv folder in the opencv-3.0.0-alpha folder.

Now add the option -D WITH_IPP=OFF to the before cmake command.

Then execute the following commands :

make -j $(nproc)
sudo make install

STEP 4:-

Finishing installation

Now some final touches :

sudo /bin/bash -c 'echo "/usr/local/lib" > /etc/ld.so.conf.d/opencv.conf'
sudo ldconfig

After the complete process execute

sudo apt-get update

and then reboot your system.

Now you have a working installation of OpenCV.

What's the point of download ippicv if you compile it without IPP (`WITH_IPP=OFF`)? – Juan Simón Nov 21 '15 at 20:02
  • What's the default setting of WITH_IPP? Don't you need to let it compile with this option ON? Here's a similar question. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/34401117/compiling-code-with-opencv-usr-bin-ld-cannot-find-lippicv – NeoJi Mar 30 '16 at 13:56

Simply download the problematic file yourself from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/opencvlibrary/files/3rdparty/ippicv/

Then place that file in the folder where it would have been downloaded to:

<your opencv build>/3rdparty/ippicv/downloads/<your os and version>

notice that the "your os and version" folder name indicates the file you need to download from sourceforge.

Follow the steps...

First Remove openjdk

sudo apt-get autoremove openjdk-*-jre

and install new jdk with following commands

sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/oracle-java7-installer*
sudo apt-get purge oracle-java7-installer*
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*java*
sudo apt-get update
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer

Now installing the OpenCV

1. install basic development environment

sudo apt-get install build-essential cmake pkg-config

2.install opencv dependencies. ubuntu 13.04 ships with opencv, which is close enough to pull in most of the needed dependencies.

sudo apt-get build-dep libopencv-dev

3.additional dependencies for java support

  • I know the steps you mentioned work for previous editions of opencv. I have done it myself. But for installing opencv3.0 the checksum error comes up. – Clive Sep 10 '14 at 06:26
  • Yes it works fine in latest version too dude...the checksum error is because of the Openjdk remove it and try it out... – Gopal00005 Sep 10 '14 at 06:38

Oh is it? I didn't try removing Openjdk. Sorry. Will try it out this week. I did actually install opencv3.0 successfully (only had trouble with OpenCL runtime error as mentioned in the comments above) using -D WITH_IPP=OFF (to skip that step). I manually downloaded the ippicv folder and pasted its contents in the ippicv folder inside my opencv directory (does it work like that?). – Clive Sep 10 '14 at 06:45
  • I'll do that as soon as I try it out. :) – Clive Sep 10 '14 at 07:21

This worked for me with OpenCV 3.1 on Ubuntu 14.04.

I guess there is a dependency problem with ippicv. You need to turn WITH_IPP and INSTALL_CREATE_DISTRIB on. Rebuild it and update the links.

cmake -DWITH_IPP=ON -DINSTALL_CREATE_DISTRIB=ON . && make -j $(nproc) && make install

try again with :

 cmake \
 -DOPENCV_ICV_URL="http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/opencvlibrary/3rdparty/ippicv"

From : Opencv installation error ubuntu 14.04
