Hello World android app crashes on startup

Question

So I'm trying to use Android Studio for a class project but making even just a blank activity which should display "HelloWorld" crashes when I try starting it and I don't know why. I don't know how to get the error console to display either so I thought I'd try posting the code here and see if there's something wrong with it for some reason.
