Google Maps crashes on my app when I click the button (Intent) to open it

Question

I have an android app with a few activities inside one which includes the Google Maps Fragment, I have a button on the main screen to open this Maps activity, when I click the Button it just crashes the app all of the time.

Bellow is the Main Class.

This is an image of the log, it has a lot more than that underneath it I just don't know how to export it, I have searched this for days and tried so many different solutions that didn't work. Please help me if you can, Thanks you.

you have not specified metadata tag for google play services. also post your logcat — Illegal Argument, Nov 11 '14 at 03:40

@SweetWisher I thought the same myself but the video tutorial I followed done exactly as I did and the map displayed, I am new to Android and don't really no alot so I apologise for my lack of knowledge when your trying to explain things to me. — JamesCgrave, Nov 11 '14 at 05:13

The problem is most probably your textview in your xml. You neither have layout_width or layout_height attribute.

Change it to :

android:background="@null"
android:editable="false"
android:cursorVisible="false"

As mentioned in comment above add metadata tag for google play services inside application tag in your manifest:

You are getting the exception :

Trying to instantiate a class com.google.android.gms.maps.SupportMapFragment that is not a Fragment –Caused by: java.lang.ClassCastException

You are using MapActivity : GoogleMaps extends MapActivity means you need to deal with MapFragment not SupportMapFragment

You can handle this in two ways :

1. Replace SupportMapFragment with MapFragment

<fragment
    android:name="com.google.android.gms.maps.MapFragment"
    android:id="@+id/map"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent"/>

In this case you need to import :

import android.app.Fragment;
import android.app.FragmentTransaction;

2. Replace MapActivity with FragmentActivity

In this case you need to import :

import android.support.v4.app.Fragment;
import android.support.v4.app.FragmentTransaction;

Your TextView does not have the correct attributes, you must specify layout_width and layout_height!
