I am trying to build a box-standard shared library (using code::blocks 13.12 on ubuntu) which obviously does not have a main function as compiles perfectly fine on windows. I am getting a bunch of relocation errors + undefined reference to main??

Any suggestions? I have pasted output below.

cheers, Mike

  • I have had this error many times before, I usually fix it by removing all the files from the project, deleting all the object files before deleting all the project meta files, closing code::blocks, reopening code::blocks and recursively readding all the files, which usually fixes it but is quite a bit of work. needless to say it's a bug in code::blocks. this also may be an error with a library you are using however. – tom Jan 02 '15 at 20:16

    it works fine with Cmake files, so I suspect it is code::blocks – Mike Jan 02 '15 at 22:09

Your link command is missing -shared flag, which is required to link a shared library.

Unfortunately, your build system did not print the link command that failed.

The error is trivially reproduced like so:

echo "int foo() { return 0; }" | gcc -xc -

/usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/crt1.o(.debug_info): relocation 0 has invalid symbol index 11
...
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.8/../../../x86_64-linux-gnu/crt1.o: In function `_start':
(.text+0x20): undefined reference to `main'
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

  • I added -shared flag to the linker settings, but no luck. – Mike Jan 03 '15 at 16:48
  • @Mike "I added ..." -- either you added it to the wrong spot, or the error has changed. Your first step should be to figure out what *actual* link command you are executing. I am 99.9% certain it doesn't have `-shared` in it. – Employed Russian Jan 03 '15 at 17:23

    I had some trouble figuring out where to add this in code::blocks. For reference for the next reader: It is under other Build Options -> Other Options (to the right of Compiler Flags) – Mike Jan 04 '15 at 19:38
