Why spark application fail with "executor.CoarseGrainedExecutorBackend: Driver Disassociated"?

Question

When i execute query sql via spark-submit and spark-sql, corresponding spark application always fail with error follows:

Finally I found the reason. It is because Yarn kills the executor (container) because the executor is memory overhead. Just turn up values of spark.yarn.driver.memoryOverhead or spark.yarn.executor.memoryOverhead or both.

How did you find the cause? I am having this issue while using Spark 1.6.1 for maximum likelihood estimation with EM algorithm. My data is small, which is less than 100MB. I don't understand why memory overhead's are so important. BTW, I am using pyspark. Is it because spark needs more overhead to lead the python libraries? – panc Jul 05 '16 at 03:26
I have had this issue just now, it has been almost impossible to find the error. I am running on AWS EMR. After all I ve found the error log on Spark History on port :18080 on executers stdout and stderror – Barbaros Alp Jul 12 '16 at 13:43
i saw the error logs on emr log => steps/stderr that driver memory is not enough , so increased it with step conf --driver-memory 6g – halil Aug 16 '16 at 10:43

@zwb I am getting the same error. I played around with the number of executor and executor memory, still no luck. I had a similar problem using the worker G.1X. After upgrading worker type to G.2X my task could finish ETL of 20 million rows of DataFrame.

One datapoint: this issue was resolved by increasing the spark driver/ k8s master pod's requested memory. I'm using client mode on Kubernetes.
