I have string like fullData1 upto fullData10 in this i need to separate out the integers and text part. how do I do it using javascript.

1What is the string? `fullData1` and `fullData10` or `fullData1 upto fullData10` ? – Felix Kling Jul 30 '10 at 09:37
-
1Will the character data always be the same? – Simon Gill Jul 30 '10 at 09:37

Split your string into an array by integer:
myArray = datastring.split(/([0-9]+)/)
Then the first element of myArray
will be something like fullData
and the second will be some numbers such as 1
or 10
.
If your string was fullData10foo
then you would have an array ['fullData', 10, 'foo']
You could also:
.split(/(?=\d+)/)
which will yield["fullData", "1", "0"]
.split(/(\d+)/)
which will yield["fullData", "10", ""]
Additionally
.filter(Boolean)
to get rid of any empty strings (""
)

7this will remove the integer and leave 2 components, the *fullData* string and an empty string. Use a positive lookahead instead, e.g. `.split(/(?=\d+)/)`. **edit** the additional information you provided makes this comment a little less accurate but the point remains - split will remove the string you split on. – Andy E Jul 30 '10 at 09:43

9With a little more alteration, you can get any length number with any length string returned in the array. `.split(/(\d+)/)` will yield `["fullData", "10", ""]` whereas the above comment will yield `["fullData", "1", "0"]` and this answer will yield `["fullData", ""]` – Joel Worsham Dec 17 '14 at 17:05

8Oh, and tack this on `.filter(Boolean)` to get an even cleaner result. `.split(/(\d+)/).filter(Boolean)` will yield `["fullData", "10"]` – Joel Worsham Dec 17 '14 at 17:09

-1, because neither Chrome, Firefox, nor IE return the promise result for the example input provided in the answer. Also, arrays use square brackets, not curly braces. +1 for Joel Worsham, whose solution works perfect! – CodeManX Apr 20 '16 at 16:40

Fair comment, I won't retrospectively edit the answer and hide the errors. See other answers. – Aiden Bell Aug 12 '17 at 23:18
tl;dr
If the RegExp sticky flag is supported in your JS environment, use it for optimal performance.

naturalMatch
is clearly faster than the rest - except for naturalExecSticky
, which is on par, but sometimes even superior (4x on a long input string).
BTW: the functions are called natural...
, because the result is useful for natural sorting ("file10" after "file2" instead of "file1", which would be the alphabetical order).

If the length of the character part is constant, you can very well remove them using a substring method.
