Error while Mocking static function call

Question

I am trying to Mock static but getting error message as below

org.mockito.exceptions.misusing.MissingMethodInvocationException: 
when() requires an argument which has to be 'a method call on a mock'.
For example:
    when(mock.getArticles()).thenReturn(articles);

My test class implementation is like

When you are using @RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class), the static mocking will not work. It looks like you need both powermocking and Spring-stuff at the same time.

Have a look at the JUnit Delegation Runner: https://github.com/jayway/powermock/wiki/JUnit_Delegating_Runner. When using the Delegation Runner, you specify @RunWith(PowerMockRunner.class), as you normally would when you use PowerMockito, but then you include @PowerMockRunnerDelegate(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class) as well. This is available as of version 1.6 of PowerMockito.

If you for some reason have to use an older version of PowerMockito, someone else has been having the same issue: issues while using @RunWith Annotation and powerMock. A solution, described in answer https://stackoverflow.com/a/12158794/4076102, is to use the PowerMockRule. In this case, you use the SpringJUnit4ClassRunner instead of the PowerMockRunner, and create a PowerMockRule field, annotated with @Rule. (Click through for the details and an example.)

I am able to run the above repository and all test classes are passed without any error but same thing is not working when trying in my project. Reported exception: javax.xml.parsers.FactoryConfigurationError: Provider for class javax.xml.parsers.SAXParserFactory cannot be created getting this error – Sandeep Jan 28 '16 at 18:48
@San: I'm curious as to where this exception originates - could you perhaps include some of the stacktrace (or all of it, if it's not too long)? I'm guessing it happens during setup of the tests... (Unless you use a SAX Parser in your code somewhere?) – reowil Jan 28 '16 at 19:17

The stacktrace you included says that this exception happens when the program tries to create/use a logger. I'm no good at loggers - whenever I run into trouble with them, I turn to the 'net to find answers. :) But you mention ConversionException - I don't see that in the included stacktrace. I don't think I understand where it fits into this. Is it an underlying exception causing the logging exception? – reowil Jan 28 '16 at 20:28

That was long indeed. Good thing there's a scroll bar. :) I _think_ this might be due to a dependency issue. There's a line saying `Caused by: java.util.ServiceConfigurationError: javax.xml.parsers.SAXParserFactory: Provider org.apache.xerces.jaxp.SAXParserFactoryImpl not a subtype`. Could it be that some library you are including (e.g. in the pom.xml if you are using Maven) includes the org.apache.xerces.jaxp.SaxParserFactoryImpl which "overshadows" some other FactoryImpl (in another library/dependency) which matches the requirements (i.e. is a subtype of javax.xml.parsers.SAXParserFactory)? – reowil Jan 28 '16 at 20:53
