Not sure if this is the right board for this, but I'm trying to set up SQL Server 2014 Express for the first time. Its installed and running on the server, but I can't log in from another machine. I forwarded port 1433, and enabled SQL Authentication for the server. My log in attempt is on the 'sa' account, and I have changed the password for that account, and confirmed that I have the correct password entered for the log-in. The server is set to accept remote connections. The server and the computer I am attempting to long in from are on the local network, and I am using the 192.168.XXX.XXX address for the connection.

Cannot connect to 192.168.15.132.

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

Have you tried starting the SQL Server Browser Service? – RSax Feb 11 '16 at 00:44
  • Don't know what that is. I tried the "browse for more" option under server name, and the server isn't showing up. – dragoncmd Feb 11 '16 at 00:46

Installations of SQL Server include a utility called Configuration Manager. It should be listed under your Programs with a red toolbox icon. If you open up Configuration Manager, you'll see a node for SQL Server Services. Under this node, look for SQL Server Browser. If it is not running, start it, and see if you can remotely connect. – RSax Feb 11 '16 at 00:56

Also, this answer might provide the solution: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11278114/enable-remote-connections-for-sql-server-express-2012 – RSax Feb 11 '16 at 00:59
