I was installing scrapy with pip in virtualenv on OS X 10.11. When it's installing cryptography, it said:

building '_openssl' extension

Any suggestions that could help me fix it?
BTW, when I was installing scrapy without virtualenv, everything went well.

  • Well, are you sure all dependencies (especially SSL-related ones) are installed? – Andras Deak -- Слава Україні Mar 25 '16 at 21:43

    if you're running homebrew, brew install openssl && env LDFLAGS="-L$(brew --prefix openssl)/lib" CFLAGS="-I$(brew --prefix openssl)/include" pip install cryptography - see https://cryptography.io/en/latest/installation/#building-cryptography-on-os-x – Damian Mar 31 '16 at 19:12
