Newbie code first asp.net mvc error

Question

Im a new to ASP.NET MVC and i'm following an online tutorial to build a website. We're using the package manager console to create a code first Db. I first entered enabled-migration and then add-migration InitialModel. These commands both worked, I now how my migration folder with InitialModel file.

When I try to update-database I get the following error:

You can't establish connection to your database because, you don't have installed SQL server. Try to download it from https://www.microsoft.com/pl-pl/server-cloud/products/sql-server-editions/sql-server-express.aspx.

do You see database file in your app_data folder? it's hidden by default but you can view it after setting it to visible in your solution explorer menu – joint_ops Jun 04 '16 at 12:32

Have you installed an SQL Server? Try run your compiler with administrator privileges and check Connection String.

Hi :) Yes I have SQL server downloaded on my computer, the connection string in my Web.Config folder is the same as above in target db. I apologise if i'm not being clear this is a new thing for me. – laura Canter Jun 04 '16 at 12:55
