Problem: Running my project on a tomcat I get the following issue:

Question: Is the problem caused by my web.xml file?

web.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

    public class HomeController {

        private final MachineRepository machineRepository;

        @Autowired
        HomeController(MachineRepository machineRepository) {
            this.machineRepository = machineRepository;
        }

        @RequestMapping(value = "/maschine/getAll", method = RequestMethod.GET)
        Iterable<Machine> readMachines(@PathVariable String userId) {

            return this.machineRepository.findAll();
        }
    }

Note: I am running the project on

  • What is in your tomcat server.xml? Port configurations are done in that. Also, are you running your project in an IDE based Server environment? – aksappy Jun 23 '16 at 11:48
  • For server.xml please see my updated post. I am running my tomcat inside my Spring Tool Suite. Version: 3.7.3.RELEASE Build Id: 201602251025 Platform: Eclipse Neon (4.6) - Is that the correct answer to your question? – jublikon Jun 23 '16 at 11:51
  • I have got this error when running inside an IDE environment. The WTP environment modifies the Tomcat environment in its own terms and cannot guarantee a successful/graceful run all the time. Can you try running your application in a standalone tomcat server as well please? – aksappy Jun 23 '16 at 11:56
  • I get the same output for running the project on a xampp tomcat server – jublikon Jun 23 '16 at 12:11
  • How have you configured your DispatcherServlet? Are there any configuration/code which manipulates your response? Unable to replicate this mate. – aksappy Jun 24 '16 at 05:42
  • Probably not this case, but I had exactly the same error when made ROOT.war application as the root of Tomcat as described there (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5328518/deploying-my-application-at-the-root-in-tomcat) but afterward removed ROOT.war by an accident. Placing ROOT back resolved it. – Andrew Terekhine Aug 25 '16 at 19:59
  • @jublikon Hi Jublikon , can you please share complete error log trace which you encountered while running your application ? – user2602205 Oct 31 '16 at 14:25

I encountered a similar problem when I publish a Maven web project after cleaning it in Eclipse. In my experience, to sovle this problem, you should:

  1. update the Maven project

  2. config build path --> remove unnecessary source folders

  3. make sure web deployment assembly looks like this,remove unnecessary entries

  4. run configurations --> choose Tomcat --> then check Classpath, make sure it looks like it

  5. At last, do not forget to build project.

Works for me. Hope it helps.

Try to look for previous error messages in the log.

In my case for instance there was an error in servlets definition in web.xml.

To see the directory where saving the jar package download by Maven and delete all child directory, then back to eclipse and click update the Maven project. This is my experience and I succeed by this way.

If you are doing work on the JSP Servlet web application then this issue is caused due to not proper servlet configuration in the web.xml.

It should be proper as follow example

web.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<web-app xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee" xsi:schemaLocation="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_3_1.xsd" id="WebApp_ID" version="3.1">
  <display-name>SimpleServletProject</display-name>
  <servlet>
    <servlet-name>XmlServlet</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>com.yogi.XmlServlet</servlet-class>
  </servlet>
  <servlet-mapping>
   <servlet-name>XmlServlet</servlet-name>
   <url-pattern>/xmlservlet</url-pattern>
   </servlet-mapping>
</web-app>

In Spring application development I have faced the above problem.

Solution: in the pom.xml file, I added slf4j as a dependency and the problem was resolved.

<dependency>
    <groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
    <artifactId>jcl-over-slf4j</artifactId>
    <version>1.7.12</version>
</dependency>

This issue usually occurs when something is wrong in web.xml. Check if all class mapping is correctly present. Example: If filter-mapping is declared, then appropriate filter for the same name should also be declared.

In the case of Spring, check if WebApplicationInitializer is properly defined.

I got same issue due to wrong url-pattern

<url-pattern>*/*</url-pattern>

right :

<url-pattern>/</url-pattern>

Maven update for the project did the trick for me.
