I am trying to access the www directory of my computer from another one without having to port forward. I used to be able to use the "Allow from all" and later "Require all granted" described in Error message "Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server", however those do not work anymore for me using Apache 2.4.17, as those lines are no longer there.

How can I fix this issue now? Is there a new way using the conf file, because most of the tutorials nowadays are about port forwarding?

EDIT: I followed this guide simonewebdesign.it/how-to-put-online-your-wampserver but now it says "[IP adress] took too long to respond" (with the right port of course). I used another port, and when I do localhost:[port], I can reach it.

Also, I am trying to give access to people outside my local network, i.e. from anywhere on the internet, and "if possible" from select IP addresses (Require IP [IP address]).

  • Are you trying to access it from a PC on the local network or one outside of your network? You need to find out your IP address and pop it in the browser, if it doesn't work you'll need to open up the FW ports on your machine for port 80. – Matt The Ninja Jun 29 '16 at 19:28

Port forwarding was never necessary just to allow access from another IP Address in the same local network (subnet)

In WAMPServer 3 there is actually a Virtual Host defined for localhost So the Put Online menu item is kind of defunct, which is why it has been made a configurable option that is turned off by default.

Edit \wamp64\bin\apache\apache{version}\conf\extra\httpd-vhost.conf

And amend this

assuming you are on a subnet that starts 192.168.1.?

Please be careful about advice you select from peoples blogs about WAMPServer. Most of it is at best well out of date and in the main its just complete rubbish.

If you want to allow access from the internet but only specific ip addresses, then put those ip addresses in a Require ip list as below

But now you have to punch a whole in your router to allow people in, there is no other way. However it does not have to be port 80 that you open.

You can for example port forward any port (above 1024, as many of the ip's below 1024 have specific uses)

EG

Forward router port 2345 to you PC's port 80

But then people will have to use the port number on their URL's i.e.

http://<your-routers-wan-ip>:2345

  • I am trying to allow access to people from outside the local network, i.e. from anywhere on the internet and if possible from select IP addresses. As for that last tutorial I used, there is definitely some truth to it, as I am no longer stuck on unauthorized access, but only a timeout. I am also using Bit Defender as my firewall, and although it doesn't "really" allow me to open a port, I deactivated it completely during testing, so that is porbably not the issue either. – MorganFR Jun 30 '16 at 08:57

Simply open \wamp64\bin\apache\apache{version}\conf\extra\httpd-vhost.conf

Edit line 10 to Require all granted

The file http-vhost.conf must be like this:

<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName localhost
    DocumentRoot c:/wamp64/www
    <Directory  "c:/wamp64/www/">
        Options +Indexes +Includes +FollowSymLinks +MultiViews
        AllowOverride All
        Require all granted
    </Directory>
</VirtualHost>

Now restart all services from wampserver tray icon
