How can I serve static content with spring boot that's external to my jar?

container starts fine and all that, get to the end of the very long debug logging

so it looks like it's recognizing the path, and we know there's stuff in there because I listed it. I hit localhost:8080 (which is the right server)

confused, why don't I see the index.html that's living in /package/dist when requesting /? I get a 404 instead.

So @david-pérez-cabrera answer isn't wrong, but neither is my original, the root cause of the problem is the @EnableWebMvc annotation. It apparently effectively disables the property of Spring MVC

There is many ways:

1.- The static content can be served by reverse-proxy like apache or nginx.

2.- The static content can be served by Spring boot, an example:

@SpringBootApplication
@EnableAutoConfiguration
@ComponentScan("com.foo")
public class FooApplication extends WebMvcConfigurerAdapter {

    @Override
    public void addResourceHandlers(ResourceHandlerRegistry registry) {

        registry.addResourceHandler("/css/**").addResourceLocations("file:path/to/your/static/css");

side note: I am using cloudfront, which is effectively a reverse proxy, but I need an original server to host it. adding another process is a bad idea (imho) and others http://techblog.netflix.com/2015/07/tuning-tomcat-for-high-throughput-fail.html. Now I'm not netflix but another server adds latency, cpu contention, memory cost, maintenance cost and risk of security vulnerabilities. – xenoterracide Aug 13 '16 at 18:29

Try removing the ** from the spring.resources.static-locations argument, but still end in /. The PathResourceResolver doesn't understand the **.

-Dspring.resources.static-locations=file:$WEBROOT/
