I am working with the javascript Google maps API and I am looking to restrict the viewing area of the map to only show PA. I currently have some kml data being used to display the county lines in PA. Now I just need to keep the user within the state of PA. How do I go about setting a restriction on the map in javascript?

I have looked up other posts regarding holes? Like cutting PA out of the map and the rest of the world is a polygon that gets its colored changed and then PA is still the main focus. I have no idea how to implement such a feature though. I am very new with working with Google Maps API.

  • I read into that one it kind of makes sense however is at the country level, where as I am looking for the state level. I will look into how that post uses other tools to do this. I was hoping for a Google Maps API way of doing this. – Bailey Miller Jan 30 '17 at 18:04
  • What is the difference between the "country level" and the "state level"? The concept is the same. This is a "Google Maps API way" of doing this (the APIs don't provide country or state polygons). – geocodezip Jan 30 '17 at 18:34

  • You can do that, but you need the coordinates from somewhere. One source (as pointed out in the linked duplicate) is http://www.gadm.org.   1. get a source for the geographic coordinates for the state's boundaries (One source would be http://www.gadm.org).
  2. Invert that polygon (example) and display it on a Google Maps Javascript API v3 map (note that KmlLayer doesn't seem to handle KML with holes, so the example uses a third party KML parser).
  3. Restrict the map to the area of Pennsylvania
