I have WebBrowser control on my winform. When I try navigate to some web-site I get standard IE error pages like:

  • "Navigation to the webpage was canceled"
  • "The address is not valid"
  • "Page couldn't be loaded"
  • etc.

I need to handle these errors and return custom error message to user. Is there any way to solve this issue?

You want to handle the NavigateError event as shown here

Edit: including example code from the link:

using System;
using System.Windows.Forms;
using System.Runtime.InteropServices;
using System.Security.Permissions;

namespace WebBrowserExtensibility
{
    [PermissionSetAttribute(SecurityAction.Demand, Name="FullTrust")]
    public class Form1 : Form
    {
        [STAThread]
        public static void Main()
        {
            Application.Run(new Form1());
        }

        private WebBrowser2 wb = new WebBrowser2();
        public Form1()
        {
            wb.Dock = DockStyle.Fill;
            wb.NavigateError += new
                WebBrowserNavigateErrorEventHandler(wb_NavigateError);
            Controls.Add(wb);

            // Attempt to navigate to an invalid address.
            wb.Navigate("www.widgets.microsoft.com");
        }

        private void wb_NavigateError(
            object sender, WebBrowserNavigateErrorEventArgs e)
        {
            // Display an error message to the user.
            MessageBox.Show("Cannot navigate to " + e.Url);
        }
    }

    public class WebBrowser2 : WebBrowser
    {
        AxHost.ConnectionPointCookie cookie;
        WebBrowser2EventHelper helper;

        [PermissionSetAttribute(SecurityAction.LinkDemand, Name="FullTrust")]
        protected override void CreateSink()
        {
            base.CreateSink();

            // Create an instance of the client that will handle the event
            // and associate it with the underlying ActiveX control.
            helper = new WebBrowser2EventHelper(this);
            cookie = new AxHost.ConnectionPointCookie(
                this.ActiveXInstance, helper, typeof(DWebBrowserEvents2));
        }

        [PermissionSetAttribute(SecurityAction.LinkDemand, Name="FullTrust")]
        protected override void DetachSink()
        {
            // Disconnect the client that handles the event
            // from the underlying ActiveX control.
            if (cookie != null)

                cookie = null;
            }

  • I'll read example and use it. Thanks. Also there is another problem. I need to handle situation when user try navigate to the link with file (when user try to download file) - I should deny such requests. Could this situation also be handled? – Akim Khalilov Nov 19 '10 at 14:22
  • If you also handle the Navigate event, you can inspect the URL - which will be the file name - and set the Cancel property of the WebBrowserNavigatingEventArgs to true if it's a file and not a page. This does depend on being able to distinguish file downloads from regular navigation, though. – stuartd Nov 19 '10 at 14:32
  • Well, I could check most of file extensions in my code (in case if uri contain filename). But there're a lot of examples when server could response with some stream, which could be detected with browser like binary data and open/save/cancel messagebox will apper. Could I catch this messagebox before it will be show to the user? – Akim Khalilov Nov 19 '10 at 14:44
  • The control looks at the Content-Type and Content-Disposition headers when deciding whether to initiate a download: the BeforeNavigate2 method lets you look at these - see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms775148%28VS.85%29.aspx for more info – stuartd Nov 19 '10 at 15:15
  • A few words about NavigateError. I could show some message, or execute other logic from my code. But how I could replace standard error message page "This program cannot display the webpage" to my custom? May be I could hide this one from user, but how? – Akim Khalilov Nov 29 '10 at 09:05
