I am getting following error while running spring application. I'm simple compiling the skeleton Spring Boot project with MySQL support and JPA that I generated using Spring Initialzr just to see if all things are working:

org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'entityManagerFactory' defined in class path resource [org/springframework/boot/autoconfigure/orm/jpa/HibernateJpaAutoConfiguration.class]: Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is org.hibernate.service.spi.ServiceException: Unable to create requested service [org.hibernate.engine.jdbc.env.spi.JdbcEnvironment]

spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=create
spring.datasource.url=jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/SampleDB
spring.datasource.username=root
spring.datasource.password=admin
management.port: 9001

While searching on net I found that this error could be resolved by adding the following dependencies:

<dependency>
    <groupId>org.hibernate</groupId>
    <artifactId>hibernate-core</artifactId>
    <version>5.0.11.Final</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.hibernate</groupId>
    <artifactId>hibernate-entitymanager</artifactId>
    <version>5.2.3.Final</version>
</dependency>

The problem is I found that both these dependencies are already part of spring-boot-starter-data-jpa so why do I need to add them explicitly. Secondly even if I do add these I get the following error:

org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'jpaMappingContext': Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: At least one JPA metamodel must be present!

Please explain to me why am I getting these errors and how to resolve them.

Thanks.

It looks like you might just need to specify the SQL dialect that you want hibernate to use because it can't figure it out. Because hibernate various databases, it needs to know which dialect of SQL it should use because the different databases actually use slightly different SQL in some cases.

Try adding the following to your application.properties, and don't use the additional dependencies.

spring.jpa.properties.hibernate.dialect = org.hibernate.dialect.MySQL5Dialect

See Why do I need to configure the SQL dialect of a data source? for more information on what SQL dialects mean.

  • Hello. What can I do if I need use multiple datasources? Mysql and H2 - I see what I need use spring.jpa.database: the default for let Spring autodetect the different SQL Dialects of each datasource? – fedrbodr Feb 21 '18 at 18:29
