Please help me understand what this code does. I found this code embedded in a favicon.ico file inside wordpress installation. I suspect this to be a malicious code and i'm trying to understand what this code is doing. I have decoded the original code in the favicon and found php scripts inside. This mostly looks like there is some file handling going on in this script. So I need your help to comprehend the code if the code is really malicious or is a code created by wordpress plugin

  • Meaning you open favicon into text editor and find this code? .ico file is just a data its not a code. Icons cannot be executed but use as displays – Carlvic Lim Dec 12 '17 at 11:20

Duplicate, have a for [look here](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/43211850/my-site-is-infected-with-obfuscated-php-malware-what-is-it-doing-how-do-i-ge) for possible solution. – lehel Dec 12 '17 at 11:44

@CarlvicLim- No, the code was some kind of random string inside favicon. This is the code i got after decoding it. – Samudra Deka Dec 12 '17 at 12:05
  • @lahel - Ok, i got that. But can you tell me what is this script actually doing?? – Samudra Deka Dec 12 '17 at 12:08

I would say this is version 2.0-1 of some wordpress rootkit contaminated theme, it works with injected values (cookie || post) and evaluates it. To make detection harder, it works with different encryption methods for the injection-strings. I dont know how this is meant to be executed within the ico file, but i am not very familiar with wordpress (maybe some stupid include statement, wordpress is known for its vulnerability). I suggest you backup the data, wipe the machine and set up a new blog. – Philipp Wrann Dec 12 '17 at 13:49
