Redirect non-www to www in .htaccess causing internal error

Question

I want to forward any non-www calls to www so I used answer from this topic, but I get

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at webmaster@example.com to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

My code looks like this

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^$
RewriteRule ^(.*) http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301]

Any ideas?

Code shown here worked fine on my Apache. I suspect some other rules may be present in your htaccess — anubhava, Mar 22 '18 at 11:01
