I have a code that crashes my excel, it takes the data from one sheet and transforms it from a tabular view to vertical. I believe it is slow because it is taking it from a database view to over 45k rows.

does anyone have any tips for optimizing this code? Crashes my excel at the next c loop

Also I tried running this in excel 2010, get an overflow error, but usually 2010 runs better and 2013 is slow or not responding. But I want to get it working for 2013.

    try powerquery if you are simply doing an unpivot/pivot operation. – QHarr May 28 '18 at 18:18
  • ^^ Is more effective with 64 bit but good with 32 as well. – QHarr May 28 '18 at 18:25
  • @QHarr , thanks ill try it.. but do I have too! – excelguy May 28 '18 at 18:35
  • Don't ***have*** to. But you could try it. It takes a few minutes tops. You put cursor in a populated cell then data/powerquery tab > from table > then in pop-up window select the columns to unpivot > right-click > unpivot columns. Done. It's inbuilt in 2016. Free add-in for 2013. – QHarr May 28 '18 at 18:37

    Read about VBA arrays from Excel ranges. Or at least don't copy-paste, but transfer a value from cell to cell. – Ryszard Jędraszyk May 28 '18 at 21:18
  • See https://stackoverflow.com/questions/36365839/excel-macrovba-to-transpose-multiple-columns-to-multiple-rows/36366394#36366394 for faster versions of your current code – Tim Williams May 28 '18 at 21:35
  • @TimWilliams , could you help with the code? Its hard to alter it to what you have – excelguy May 29 '18 at 16:54
  • Sorry- I don't have time to rewrite your code, but the link I posted should give you some ideas on how to avoid writing data cell-by-cell – Tim Williams May 29 '18 at 18:08
  • @TimWilliams , thank you – excelguy May 29 '18 at 18:43
  • @RyszardJędraszyk , would you be able to help? hard to know how to replace stuff.. – excelguy May 29 '18 at 20:10

    If you want to optimize this, you can ask for help on: https://codereview.stackexchange.com/ or perhaps ask on StackOverflow how to approach a specific part of the code. – Ryszard Jędraszyk May 30 '18 at 03:09
  • Did you find out what line causes error and crashes excel? – Maciej Los Jul 03 '18 at 21:23
  • @MaciejLos , Yes `next c` loop causes it to crash. I suppose its the giant loop in the transform data section. – excelguy Jul 04 '18 at 14:13

    without knowing what the basic layout of what is on `sheet1` and `sheet2`, reading through and optimizing your code to your exact need will be hard to impossible to do – Taylor Alex Raine Jul 05 '18 at 15:24
  • It will benefit you if you post a small, but relevant, sample of the source data and the expected output, so we can have a better idea of what you tried to achived with the code posted. – EEM Jul 06 '18 at 23:29

Sorry, but i don't want to analyse your code and even use it for set of reasons...

First of all, a common error within VBA programming is to used unspecified (undeclared) variables. This causes several issues, especially when a programmer have made a spelling mistake (typing error), for example instead of myvariable he used myvairable. So...
It's strongly recommended to use Option Explicit statement, because... as MSDN documentation states:

If you do not specify a data type, the Variant data type is assigned by default.

(...)

Variables of type Variant require more memory resources than most other variables

(...)

If a module includes the Option Explicit statement, a compile-time error will occur when Visual Basic encounters a variable name that has not been previously declared, or that has been spelled incorrectly.

For further details, please see:
Wikipedia: Visual Basic for Applications
VBA: Declaring Variables
Runtime vs Compile time
Office Talk: Working with VBA in the 32-bit and 64-bit Versions of Office 2010

Second of all, an Overflow error occurs when you try to make an assignment that exceeds the limitations of the target of the assignment. That error might be the reason of Excel crush.

Third of all, you should use code in context. Un-contextual usage of code might be the reason of several issues, such as loss of data.
Imagine: there are 2 opened workbooks. Both of them have the same set of sheets: Sheet1, Sheet2 and Sheet3. When you use Sheets("Sheet1").Range("A1") = "whatever" changes are made in active workbook, let's say Workbook1, but you wanted to make changes in Workbook2. Got it?
BTW: note, that Sheet is not the same as Worksheet
Sheets vs. Worksheets
So, a proper way to use code-in-context is:

Dim srcWsh As Worksheet
Dim trgWsh As Worksheet

Set srcWsh = ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Sheet1") 'you can use index too, see:
Set trgWsh = Workbooks("Workbook2").Worksheets(2)

trgWsh.Range("A1") = srcWsh.Range("A1")

'finally, you have to clean up
Set srcWsh = Nothing
Set trgWsh = Nothing

The same rules have to be used when you create or call procedure or function

Finally...
As to the method to reverse (unpivot) data...
I did use an example from MSDN: Using PIVOT and UNPIVOT, where these data:

VendorID    Emp1    Emp2    Emp3    Emp4    Emp5
1           4       3       5       4       4
2           4       1       5       5       5
3           4       3       5       4       4
4           4       2       5       5       4
5           5       1       5       5       5

have to be "converted" into this form:

VendorID    Employee    Orders
----------- ----------- ------
1            Emp1       4
1            Emp2       3
1            Emp3       5
1            Emp4       4
1            Emp5       4
2            Emp1       4
2            Emp2       1
2            Emp3       5
2            Emp4       5
2            Emp5       5
...

My code:

Option Explicit

Sub Test()

        ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Arkusz2"), _
        "A1", "B1:F1"

Feel free to change it to your needs...

  • Thanks , can you explain where I put my sheets and some of my parameters into your code? – excelguy Jul 09 '18 at 21:07
  • Have you tried to change my code to your needs? Where did you stuck? I thought that my code (with comments) is quite understandable... But, if you need my help, i'm able to help you. Create new chat and invite me. – Maciej Los Jul 10 '18 at 06:28
  • @excelguy, i've updated my answer respectively to your needs ;) – Maciej Los Jul 10 '18 at 11:26
  • Thanks, ill test it out shortly. By the way what is `Attribute`, `Value`, and `D1:AW1`? Having trouble figuring out which of my values go here – excelguy Jul 10 '18 at 11:45
  • @excelguy, please download unpivot.xlsm. 'D1:AW1' is an address of headers to reverse data into 'Attribute' and 'Value'. – Maciej Los Jul 10 '18 at 13:38
  • I've had trouble downloading the sheet. Pc will not allow it. – excelguy Jul 10 '18 at 13:42
  • @excelguy, OK. Here's a 7-zip archive: [Unpivot.7z](https://www.myqnapcloud.com/smartshare/6d5e3l5kn2opo688486w8zcz_6yxdlqJ) – Maciej Los Jul 10 '18 at 19:40
  • Thanks , it seems to be working(no errors) but takes very long, still running its been 20 minutes now. Wondering if it will ever complete or just cause my excel to 'not respond' – excelguy Jul 11 '18 at 17:00
  • Strange... Do you have another macros in your sheet which are called within events? If yes, you have to disable events and screen updating (right after `On Error...`. Do not forget to restore these settings in `Exit_UnpivotData` subroutine. BTW: Thank you for accepting my answer and you're very welcome. – Maciej Los Jul 12 '18 at 05:59
  • I do have other macros that are called within events, do I have to disable them all or just in this sub? Could you show me in the answer? – excelguy Jul 12 '18 at 11:48
  • Thanks for all your help, lol for some reason still taking long. but haven't got not responding yet. – excelguy Jul 12 '18 at 20:39

Try this:

Sub Unpivot()
    Call ReversePivotTable("Sheet1", "A", "C", "Sheet2", "Name")
End Sub

Sub ReversePivotTable(source_sheet, from_col, to_col, target_sheet, Optional type_header = "type", Optional value_header = "value")

    Application.ScreenUpdating = False
    LAST_ROW = Sheets(source_sheet).Cells(Rows.Count, 1).End(xlUp).Row
    If LAST_ROW > 1 Then
        Sheets(target_sheet).Cells.ClearContents
    Else
        Exit Sub
    End If

    pvt_type_col = Sheets(target_sheet).Range(to_col & 1).Offset(0, 1).Column 'D
    pvt_value_col = Sheets(target_sheet).Range(to_col & 1).Offset(0, 2).Column 'E

    'get headers
    Sheets(source_sheet).Range(from_col & ":" & to_col).Copy
    Sheets(target_sheet).Range("A1").PasteSpecial xlPasteValues
    Sheets(target_sheet).Cells(1, pvt_type_col).Value = type_header

  • Thanks for your reply. I am still getting excel not responding on the `Next c` part of the transform data part. – excelguy Jul 04 '18 at 14:27

    I actually created sample data and checked both your original code and my version I've presented. Yours took ages to complete - it's quite possible that slower machine could crash. However, corrected version - where I assign values to cell instead of copying them was quite fast (I have created 45k rows of sample data). If it's possible please show an example of actual data you are using this macro for. – Pawel Czyz Jul 04 '18 at 17:47
  • Can I send you a sample sheet? Can you message me in chat? – excelguy Jul 05 '18 at 01:55
