Removing emoji from text remove also Japanese language

Question

I use the follow code:

                       u"\U00002702-\U000027B0"
                       u"\U000024C2-\U0001F251"
                       "]+", flags=re.UNICODE)
    return emoji_pattern.sub(r' ', string)

While string == '趣味でバルーンひねってます' the results is just an empty string, why ?

The last 2 removed the japanese
