Passing user variables in a demo class through a method in a different class

Question

The method that I am having trouble with is the "getTotalCost" method.

Each method is as follows:

DemoRoomCarpet

I feel like the issue is something minor that I am missing, but I could be wrong. Apologies for no comments, but I will add them once I get over this error. Passing the getTotalCost method gives a null pointer exception, but I believe that I passed the user input through it.

You never initialize the instance member `dim`, so when you call `dim.getArea()`, you get a `NullPointerException`. — Laf, Oct 31 '18 at 15:43

Thats because, RoomDimension dim is not been initialized. The field has to be initialized either using constructor or through setter.

In RoomCarpet class:

public RoomCarpet(double carpetCost, RoomDimension dim)
{
    this.carpetCost = carpetCost;
    this.dim = dim;
}

In main:

    RoomCarpet myRoomCarpet =
            new RoomCarpet(cost, myRoomDim);

How would I initialize this through the constructor or setter? Would it be made in the RoomDimension class? – VellicatePyramid88 Oct 31 '18 at 17:47

No problem, thanks for the help. So I add the made up variable to the constructor, and then if I want to pass it through the other class I need to the parameters in the other class. – VellicatePyramid88 Oct 31 '18 at 19:06
