What does the #!/ do for SEO in the URL?

What's the shebang/hashbang (#!) in Facebook and new Twitter URLs for?

If you've ever noticed on Twitter and Facebook, they use #!/ a lot.

IE. www.facebook.com/xbox/#!/profile.php?12345/#!/home.php

I'm thinking I have a use for it if it does what I'm thinking it does.

Any ideas??
