Spring Boot project Null pointer Exception

Question

I have gone through all the threads(16) posted about this Exception but none of them relate to my issue. I also have tried some answers from the following links with no luck! Spring security null pointer exception and Spring Framework Autowired Null Pointer Exception

What I think I did correctly looking from previous answers,

I have annotated every class and Interface correctly, @service, @component @controller.... everything
I have @Autowired all possible the services that I implemented

So here is My problem:

According to my stack trace, I get NullPointer Exception showing that I have issues with my "updateShoppingCart" method in my "ShoppingCartServiceImpl" class.

It says have a problem with my "shoppingCart.setGrandTotal(cartTotal);" operation in "updateShoppingCart" method.

The second line of my stack trace shows that I have a problem in my controller where I called my "updateShoppingCart" method. It looks like this shoppingCartService.updateShoppingCart(shoppingCart);

@OlsenDhaba `user.getShoppingCart();` obviously returns `null`. Possibly `shoppingCart` for that `user` is not added to the database at all. Otherwise mapping of your `User` entity is broken and repository doesn't fetch a `shoppingCart` correctly. — Jakub Ch., Feb 14 '19 at 12:28

@DhanrajTijare NPE is thrown from inside of `shoppingCartService` so it can't be `null`! Service is wired properly. You **don't need** to configure neither `ComponentScan` nor `EntityScan` having spring boot starters included. Please stop giving wrong advices... — Jakub Ch., Feb 14 '19 at 15:16

Thank you all for your comments! the problem was with the UserService, it didn't set ShoppingCart that is why user.getShoppingCart(); is returning Null. Adding "user.setShoppingCart(shoppingCart); " to my UserService fixed the problem. — Olsen Dhaba, Feb 14 '19 at 18:13

Please check/debug if you get non-null result for this - ShoppingCart shoppingCart = user.getShoppingCart();

Seems like the shoppingCart is null and it's not Spring specific issue.

This is Exactly what the problem was.... I checked my code and understood the user.getShoppingCart(); returns Null, the problem was I didn't set ShoppingCart.... So the Fix is adding "user.setShoppingCart(shoppingCart); " to my User service. Thanks a lot! – Olsen Dhaba Feb 14 '19 at 18:04
