java.time.format.DateTimeParseException when parsing date

Question

I am getting this exception when invoking that code:

String date = "2017-07-21T17:32:28Z";

LocalDateTime dateTime = LocalDateTime.parse(date, ISO_INSTANT);

The ISO instant formatter that formats or parses an instant in UTC, * such as '2011-12-03T10:15:30Z'.

I want to check if date String is a valid date with pattern: yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ssX

`LocalDateTime` and time zone is kind of a contradiction. First line of its documentation: *"A date-time without a time-zone..."* - not sure if that is the problem... — user85421, Mar 04 '19 at 11:48

Why are you trying to use `LocalDateTime`? It is timezoneless. Consider using `OffsetDateTime` instead. — Mark Rotteveel, Mar 05 '19 at 10:32

You can use a datetimeformatter to perform this task easily. Try the below modified code

String date = "2017-07-21T17:32:28Z";

DateTimeFormatter dateTimeFormatter = DateTimeFormatter.ISO_INSTANT;


Date testDate = Date.from(Instant.from(dateTimeFormatter.parse(date)));

System.out.print(testDate);

Why are you building a `java.util.Date`? The `java.time` classes are far superior and easier to use. – Mark Rotteveel Mar 05 '19 at 10:31

There is no **need** to transform to `java.util.Date`. Transform to `OffsetDateTime` or maybe `LocalDateTime`. – Mark Rotteveel Mar 06 '19 at 11:51
