I want to install ggalt package which needs proj4 package installed, but when I install proj4 it throws an error libproj and/or proj_api.h not found in standard search locations.

My computer is Mac, and I have installed PROJ.4 using brew install proj, and the version of R is 3.6.0_2. I searched on the Internet for this problem but didn't find a method to solve it. I'm not a coder and just begin to learn R, so I don't know how to do now.

  • Does `proj` contain the required `proj_api.h`? Where is it located? `brew ls --verbose proj` should help answering these questions. – Ralf Stubner May 27 '19 at 05:55
  • `proj_api.h` is located in `/usr/local/Cellar/proj/6.1.0/include/proj_api.h` – juby May 27 '19 at 07:15
  • Can you define the environment variable `PKG_CPPFLAGS` to `-I/usr/local/Cellar/proj/6.1.0/include/` prior to installing the `proj4` package? – Ralf Stubner May 27 '19 at 08:25
  • I use `export PKG_CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/Cellar/proj/6.1.0/include"` and `Sys.setenv("PKG_CPPFLAGS"="-I/usr/local/Cellar/proj/6.1.0/include") `,but not work – juby May 27 '19 at 10:19

    Error message stays the same? BTW, why are you not using the binary packages available at CRAN. I tried to reproduce the issue and the package got installed without issue. – Ralf Stubner May 27 '19 at 12:33

I'm running Pop!_OS 20.04 (Ubuntu fork) and ran into the same problem with proj4 not installing (R 3.6.3). I don't believe libproj was installed yet. I was able to do that manually via the terminal with this command:

sudo apt-get install libproj-dev

I restarted R and was able to install proj4.

    It might be necessary to install another library as well. `libproj-dev` alone was not sufficient on a Ubuntu 18.04. Had to install `libgdal-dev` as well (see one of the answer to the github issue: https://github.com/hrbrmstr/ggalt/issues/22 – Cosmin Saveanu Sep 12 '21 at 14:20

I got also this annoying problem. I was able to build it manually - but at the moment it's a dirty hack. Note I'm not a C programmer so it will not be fixed.

I found at the top of proj_api.h:

#ifndef ACCEPT_USE_OF_DEPRECATED_PROJ_API_H
#error 'To use the proj_api.h you must define the macro ACCEPT_USE_OF_DEPRECATED_PROJ_API_H'
#endif

I figured I could insert 

#define ACCEPT_USE_OF_DEPRECATED_PROJ_API_H

before line 7 in src/p4.c and line 1462 of configure of the package source (in both cases just before #include).

I suppose one could also remove the section from proj_api.h - however I have not the slightest clue if it might break anything.
