I'm trying to create a small GUI using javafx. It works as long as I'm just setting up the scene, the stage, the title and a GridPane. As soon as I try to add labels or buttons it throws a (for me) incomprehensible Exception.

My IDE is intelliJ running on Ubuntu 18.04, I'm running Java openjdk 11.0.2. I tried different versions of javafx, but both (12.0.2 and 11.0.2) threw the same Exception under the same circumstances. I double checked the integration of the javafx library and "confirmed" this by getting another error massege ("java: package javafx.application does not exist", etc.) and by intelliJ going crazy in that case.

package sample;

import javafx.application.Application;
import javafx.scene.Scene;
import javafx.scene.control.Label;
import javafx.scene.layout.GridPane;
import javafx.stage.Stage;

public class Main extends Application {
    @Override
    public void start(Stage primaryStage){
        GridPane root = new GridPane();
        primaryStage.setTitle("Hello World");
        primaryStage.setScene(new Scene(root, 300, 275));

        //Label lbl = new Label("test");
        //GridPane.setConstraints(lbl, 0,0);
        //root.getChildren().addAll(lbl);

        primaryStage.show();
    }

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        launch(args);
    }
}

The three lines that are commented out seem to be the root of all evil, as the code compiles and runs perfectly without them and chokes with them included.

With the evil lines inlcuded the following Exception is thrown:
