  scala> val aList = List.range(1,1000000)

Why do the first call to the function take long, and subsequent ones take <50% time in sbt-console ?

scala> iterateList(aList)
total time to iterate in micro-seconds : 29000

scala> iterateList(aList)
total time to iterate in micro-seconds : 12000

scala> iterateList(aList)
total time to iterate in micro-seconds : 13000

Have you tried outside console? With dedicated tool such as JMH? – cchantep Oct 08 '19 at 09:20
  • There may be many reasons, from **JIT** to random variations in your system. If you use a proper tool to benchmark some code, you will see that at the long run, consequent invocations take the same time. - Anyways, what is the question? – Luis Miguel Mejía Suárez Oct 08 '19 at 12:52
  • I ran it for about 10 times. I could see every time the first invocation takes time. Then it drops and stays in the 11-13 micros range. Since nothing is lazy in the code, I could not explain this behavior to myself. I parallely ran jconsole, and I see no peaks. – ForeverLearner Oct 08 '19 at 13:02
  • @cchantep. Thanks for pointing towards JMH. – ForeverLearner Oct 08 '19 at 13:03
  • Profiling the JVM is [notoriously complicated](https://stackoverflow.com/a/513259/4993128). In this case you might take note of rules #1, #4, and #5. – jwvh Oct 08 '19 at 17:53
