With very little knowledge of SSL and related security technologies now we have to send requests to a resource using mentioned stuff:

However, whenever we try to do so, we get the following exception:

Exception in thread "main" javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: Received fatal alert: handshake_failure

The tricky thing here that it's stated on their service that if you want to use the service you need to have 2 certificates installed.

And that's true, we installed these certificates on our windows-running local machines and now we can access the resource (only using IE though).

In Java, I believe, the process of installing trusted certs in cacerts is equivalent to installing it in Windows with certmgr.msc.

But the error above persists.

Here's the full log with ssl debug enabled:

Things we've tried so far:

  1. Including these certs in cacert using keytool (in the listing of the certs, these two do exist)
  2. Adding bouncy castle to the ext folder and prioritazing it to 1 in security file

As far as we know, they use a quite rare algorithm in the certs. Standard Java seurity doesn't support it, but BC does.

How can we resolve the issue? And is there any way to understand the log?

Thanks in advance.

  • Possible duplicate question? https://stackoverflow.com/questions/6353849/received-fatal-alert-handshake-failure-through-sslhandshakeexception – algorythms Nov 26 '19 at 17:24
  • Only part of the WIndows/certmgr store corresponds to Java's truststore which by default is in cacerts. However, your error is occurring in response to (1.2) ClientHello before any cert handling or checking occurs and so is extremely unlikely to be caused by a cert problem. I get the same failure with my IE11 (on Win8.1). Are you using an IE+Windows that has been specially tailored, perhaps to add GOST-based ciphersuites and certs (since the domainname is Russian)? That would indeed be rare, both for the asymmetric (certs and kx) and symmetric (encrypt, MAC). – dave_thompson_085 Nov 27 '19 at 07:20
  • Yes it is, well, it seems that the root of the problem is due to cipher suites mismatch. The server's cipher is `GOST2001-GOST89-GOST89` which is not listed in java ssl cipher suites.. The only opensource tool supporting it seems to be OpenSSL with a custom `gost engine`. Have no idea how to integrate those (Java for logic and OpenSSL solely for SSL connections)... – J Doe Nov 27 '19 at 07:58
