I am trying to get records count from a pre-created table in MySQL named students_accounts, in database fcms within a Spring Boot project, however a NullPointerException is always thrown:

  • When you created the new Account using `Account acc= new Account(account.getUsername(), account.getPassword());` you are not getting the `jdbcTemplate` injected. You should look at splitting your `Account` into an `AccountService` and an `Account` where the former is injected into your `AccountController`. – kendavidson Dec 27 '19 at 18:00

you can only @Autowire in "spring managed beans" into other "spring managed beans".

So what is a "Spring managed bean". It is a bean (class/object) that is created by the spring framework and managed by the framework.

Account.class is created by you, the developer when doing new Account() which means that it is managed by you, and not by spring, and that in turns means that JdbcTemplate will not get autowired in, and you will get a NullPointerException when trying to use it.

To implement a bean that is managed by spring you usually use any of the keywords @Service @Component @Controller on a class that will contain all the buisness logic of your application.

Account is a DTO, it should only contain parameters, and not logic. You should create a new class that performs the database calls and make it a spring managed bean, and autowire in the jdbcTemplate. Alternatively you should look into spring data, and use repositories instead.
