I'm trying to run a web application on Tomcat from Netbeans, and after hours of trying I can not figure out what the following error is trying to tell me:

In another project where I originally discovered the problem, I have the exact same issue with a Listener, so I suspect a general problem instantiating classes via Reflection. If I pack the same application as a WAR file and copy it to tomcat/webapps it starts without problems. The Servlet in question is a fresh servlet as created by Netbeans, but I include the code for completeness's sake.

My environment for all this is: JDK 14, Netbeans 11.3, Tomcat 9.0.34, running on Windows 10. Any help would be appreciated as I need to get code running with exactly this setup.

I don't know exactly why the error presents like this, but you can solve it by disabling "Compile on Save" in your project's settings.
