I'm using Spring Boot 2 with Java 11. I have the below entity ...

@Data
@Entity
@Table(name = "Users")
public class User implements UserDetails {

    @Id
    @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO)
    private UUID id;

    private String firstName;
    private String lastName;

    @NotBlank(message = "Email is mandatory")
    @Column(unique=true)
    private String email;
    private String password;
    private boolean enabled;
    private boolean tokenExpired;

    @ManyToMany
    @JoinTable(
        name = "users_roles",
        joinColumns = @JoinColumn(
          name = "user_id", referencedColumnName = "id"),
        inverseJoinColumns = @JoinColumn(
          name = "role_id", referencedColumnName = "id"))
    private Collection<Role> roles;

Note the unique constraint on the email column. Is there a way to configure Spring Boot to verify that constraint when I submit a create request? I have the below rest controller ...

@RestController
@RequestMapping("/api/user")
public class UserController {

    @Autowired
    private UserService userService;

    ...

    @PostMapping
    @ResponseStatus(code = HttpStatus.CREATED)
    public void create(@Valid @RequestBody User user) {
        userService.create(user);
    }

but when I submit a request to the endpoint, even though an email already exists in my table, the call succeeds anyway. What's the easiest way with Spring Boot to make sure I can reject a request if my bean fails validation (including its unique constraint)?

Edit: In response to the answer given, adding the code results in the below error when an email is taken. When it is not taken I don't get the error, but the endpoint returns a 400 instead of a 201, as it did before.

    ` @Column(unique=true)` that is not an unique contraint checking, it's an unique contraint BDD déploiement. You have to implement the unique contraint into the BDD, or create an constraint validator by implementing `javax.validation.ConstraintValidator`. – Zorglube Jun 23 '20 at 15:10

  • @Zorglube, when you write, "you have to implement the unique constraint into the BDD," how do I do that? – satish Jun 23 '20 at 18:38
  • `create constraint .... ` – Zorglube Jun 23 '20 at 19:07
  • Is "create constraint ..." meant to be the SQL that I would run? – satish Jun 23 '20 at 19:24
  • How can do you `implement the unique constraint into the BDD` without doing `SQL` ? – Zorglube Jun 24 '20 at 10:06
  • What do you mean by "BDD"? Anyway, on my development machine I have "spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=update" set in my application.properties to aid in SQL creation. I would like to avoid having to write SQL as much as possible if I can get the framework to do it for me. – satish Jun 25 '20 at 18:36

You may create a custom annotation to validate the email constrains or may add validation in the service layer manually and can throw the exception.

@Column

For @Column, make sure unique constrain is added for email column in the database. Try to drop and recreate the database using spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=create and check the unique constrain

/**
 * (Optional) Whether the column is a unique key. This is a
 * shortcut for the <code>UniqueConstraint</code> annotation at the table
 * level and is useful for when the unique key constraint
 * corresponds to only a single column. This constraint applies
 * in addition to any constraint entailed by primary key mapping and
 * to constraints specified at the table level.
 */
boolean unique() default false;

Custom annotation

UniqueEmail.java

import javax.validation.Constraint;
import javax.validation.Payload;
import java.lang.annotation.ElementType;
import java.lang.annotation.Retention;
import java.lang.annotation.RetentionPolicy;
import java.lang.annotation.Target;

@Constraint(validatedBy = UniqueEmailValidator.class)
@Target(ElementType.FIELD)
@Retention(RetentionPolicy.RUNTIME)
public @interface UniqueEmail {
    String message() default "Email address is already registered";
    Class<?>[] groups() default { };
    Class<? extends Payload>[] payload() default { };
}

UniqueEmailValidator.java

import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;
import org.springframework.stereotype.Component;

import javax.validation.ConstraintValidator;
import javax.validation.ConstraintValidatorContext;

@Component
public class UniqueEmailValidator implements ConstraintValidator<UniqueEmail, String> {

    @Autowired UserRepository userRepository;

    @Override
    public boolean isValid(String email, ConstraintValidatorContext context) {
        return !userRepository.existsByEmail(email);
    }
}

User.java

@UniqueEmail
@NotBlank(message = "Email is mandatory")
@Column(unique=true)
private String email;

UPDATE

UniqueEmailValidator

You have slightly misconfigured isValid method, we should return true if the email does not exist and false for email is already exists

Change

return userRepository.findByEmail(email) != null;

To

return userRepository.findByEmail(email) == null;

Annotation get invoked twice

You may need to add the property in application.properties (src/main/resources, src/main/test)

spring.jpa.properties.javax.persistence.validation.mode=none

validation-mode

By default, Bean Validation (and Hibernate Validator) is activated. When an entity is created, updated (and optionally deleted), it is validated before being sent to the database. The database schema generated by Hibernate also reflects the constraints declared on the entity.

You can fine-tune that if needed:

AUTO: if Bean Validation is present in the classpath, CALLBACK and DDL are activated.

CALLBACK: entities are validated on creation, update and deletion. If no Bean Validation provider is present, an exception is raised at initialization time.

DDL: (not standard, see below) database schemas are entities are validated on creation, update and deletion. If no Bean Validation provider is present, an exception is raised at initialization time.

NONE: Bean Validation is not used at all

Test

UserControllerIntegrationTest#registerWithNonUniqueEmail You may remove assertEquals("Failed", responseEntity.getBody()) as response string be different for bad request.

  • Thanks for this. I implemented it as you have it, but I get a NullPointerException. I noticed while debugging that the "isValid" is getting called twice and the second time the "userRepository" is not getting autowired and is null. Also after implementing this the successful calls (where the email is unique) now fail with a 400 error. – satish Jul 03 '20 at 14:25
  • Glad you have resolved the constraints issue. This should be involved once, you might have used the annotations at other places. – Romil Patel Jul 03 '20 at 14:30
  • Actually I haven't resolved this issue yet. I did confirm I only applied the annotation once on the User model as you suggested. Also it is odd that it prevents successful validation even when there is no duplicate email in the database. – satish Jul 03 '20 at 15:18
  • This should work, you may share the GitHub link of the project (if possible) to reproduce the issue – Romil Patel Jul 03 '20 at 15:31
  • Thank you for your help. The Git link is https://github.com/satishpurdhi/cardmania/tree/master/backend. To see the issue, run "mvn clean test -Dtest=UserControllerIntegrationTest". It will demonstrate the issue for both submitting a unique email and a duplicate email. – satish Jul 03 '20 at 16:41
  • @satish, I have added the details, you may change the code accordingly and can run the test cases which should be passed – Romil Patel Jul 04 '20 at 06:10
  • If you wish I can create the commit for the same – Romil Patel Jul 04 '20 at 06:11
  • I have implemented these two changes and things seem to be working well. One question -- when there is a non-unique email submitted to the controller, is there any way I con configure the response to contain the error message, "Email address is already registered" that you have in the UniqueEmail interface? Right now the response status contains 400 but the response message is empty. – satish Jul 04 '20 at 19:47
  • Glad it working fine. You may accept the answer if its working fine. To manage the exception at application level and show response according you may explore the `@ControllerAdvive` and `@ExceptionHandler`. I have provided the details here https://stackoverflow.com/a/62517888/10961238 – Romil Patel Jul 05 '20 at 04:07
  • How do you solve the NullPoiterExcption Issue? – Sara Selim Jun 18 '22 at 00:18
  • What about scenario where user updates their profile. For example, a controller receives DTO object which contains fields that user updates, and one of the fields is Email address which has `@UniqueEmail` annotation. However client submitted form with same email address. In your implementation, an error will be thrown because that email is already present in the database. Can you update implementation in order to reflect this scenario, is there any way to pass "user id" to validator component. User id is passed to Spring application through path `PUT /api/users/1` – clzola Apr 18 '23 at 10:39

I think the easy way is to use Native Query in the Spring boot Repository class.

@Query(value = "SELECT * FROM customers_details WHERE email= :email , nativeQuery = true) public List findEmaiList(@Param("username") String username);

And pass this findEmaiList() method in Service class and after pass to the Controller class.

In the controller class, you have to create a separate API and pass the validation whatever you want to add if you have to find the unique mobile number you can do it with the native query.
