Unable to install Pytorch on Mac OS X from scratch due to Pytorch package conflicts with Conda - how to fix?

Question

I have python 3.9 and I am trying to install pytorch current version (as of this writing 1.9). But when I do it I get the following error:

For me it seems that adding conda-forge to the channels works. My understanding of why that works is that the pytorch channel doesn't have all packages or something (details here: https://github.com/pytorch/pytorch/issues/59517).

Do:

conda install -y pytorch torchvision torchaudio -c pytorch -c conda-forge

other example installations:

conda install -y pytorch==1.7.1 torchvision torchaudio cudatoolkit=10.2 -c pytorch -c conda-forge
