SonarQube is failing with a Java Heap Size Out of Memory

I have added that to my build.yml file but it doesn't seem to be taken into account ?

My build is running on "windows-latest"

  • On official documentation (https://docs.sonarqube.org/latest/analysis/scan/sonarscanner/), on Troubleshooting part there command: `export SONAR_SCANNER_OPTS="-Xmx512m"`. Did you try this? – Djordje Nedovic Oct 04 '21 at 10:39

  • I should have mentioned that my build is executed by a GitHub Action so I don't technically have the ability to do it via a command prompt as it is an automated process – Frederic Oct 05 '21 at 14:21

  • @DjordjeNedovic That could be but i was wondering if my environment variable is actually taken into account since increasing it didn't make the build analyze more files, instead it failed on the same file. Also, I found these two issues: https://github.com/Riverside-Software/sonar-openedge/issues/570 https://github.com/Riverside-Software/sonar-openedge/issues/59 My advice is to update the error log with a full-stack message and check if there is a rule or command that is recursive. – Djordje Nedovic Oct 14 '21 at 07:07

  • @Frederic, Thanks for the log, as I can see from the stack trace, some lines are called few times, for example, `org.gradle.internal.operations.DefaultBuildOperationRunner`, and log message: `5 actionable tasks: 5 executed`. My blind guess is that either five actions have a memory footprint of 7+Gb or one of them is in a recursive loop... Is it possible to run the build command with `--debug` or `--scan` option so you get a more detailed error log? – Djordje Nedovic Oct 14 '21 at 18:34

  • @DjordjeNedovic, actually, I tried to exclude the file where it was choking on it (by using `property "sonar.exclusions"`) and it now doesn't have the Heap issue anymore. But now, even though it's successful, the report doesn't contain the results for my Java file. So it's another issue and I'm kind of giving up honestly....   • @DjordjeNedovic Coverage report. The report and especially the code source folder doesn't contain any .java files even though the report says `2251/2251 source files have been analyzed ` – Frederic Oct 18 '21 at 14:33
  • @Frederic test coverage reports are generated separately with some plugin like JaCoCo for example. Then, Sonar does not create the report, it reads generated reports and shows them in UI. Maybe that is missing? – Djordje Nedovic Oct 18 '21 at 14:36
  • But I am not trying to get a test coverage but the coverage for my source code, is that something that needs a plugin? – Frederic Oct 18 '21 at 16:50
  • @DjordjeNedovic I ended up excluding this file in the analysis using the property `sonar.exclusions`. While it works now, i will still want to have it analyzed in the future. Thank you again a lot for your help and time. – Frederic Oct 28 '21 at 21:31

Adding a gradle.properties file with the following JVM args fixed my issue

org.gradle.jvmargs=-Xmx1g
