I am able to build it manually by downloading the tarball and ./configure && make

How can I get it to install?

  • Maybe you can add `CFLAGS=-w` to the environment variables? (suppress all warnings, as the error seem to be caused by a warning treated as an error) – M. Zhang Oct 06 '21 at 02:55
  • I think Python 3.10 only got released today (?) so I'd stick with 3.9 for now, which i believe is the stable release at least for like a month or so. – rv.kvetch Oct 06 '21 at 03:07

    @rv.kvetch I would like to start testing my stuff with 3.10 though, for which I need to install it. – ojii Oct 06 '21 at 05:16
  • @M.Zhang there's also one error in the log: "error: 'TARGET_OS_IPHONE' is not defined, evaluates to 0" – ojii Oct 06 '21 at 05:17
  • Does it work if you build from the tarball? It might be useful to figure out if the bug is with pyenv or with python's build process. – xrisk Oct 06 '21 at 06:00
  • FWIW, it works for me (non M1); so the problem might be with your environment. Check your environment flags for nonstandard things. – xrisk Oct 06 '21 at 06:01
  • @xrisk interesting, I can build it manually with `./configure && make`. I'd still prefer if pyenv could manage python for me rather than building it manually. – ojii Oct 06 '21 at 08:08
  • I assume you've already done `brew update && brew upgrade pyenv` - right? – rv.kvetch Oct 06 '21 at 13:15
  • @ojii I sugggest you try the build with a clean environment. For example, I can see that pyenv is picking up on your built version of llvm. Otherwise, you should probably file this as a bug on the pyenv repository. – xrisk Oct 07 '21 at 12:17

Well I had almost the same issue on MacOS Monterey (12.0.1), and what worked for me was:

  1. Reinstalling CommandLineTools from scratch:
sudo rm -rf /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools
sudo xcode-select --install
  1. Reinstalling some command line tools using Homebrew:
brew update && brew upgrade && brew reinstall zlib openssl bzip2 readline
  1. Installing the required Python version (3.10.0 in this case) by using flags configuration as shown below:
CFLAGS="-I$(brew --prefix openssl)/include \
   -I$(brew --prefix bzip2)/include \
   -I$(brew --prefix readline)/include \
   -I$(xcrun --show-sdk-path)/usr/include" \
LDFLAGS="-L$(brew --prefix openssl)/lib \
   -L$(brew --prefix readline)/lib \
   -L$(brew --prefix zlib)/lib \
   -L$(brew --prefix bzip2)/lib" \
   pyenv install 3.10.0

The problem was that I had a second version of clang installed (via homebrew), which interfered with the build. After running brew uninstall llvm pyenv/python-build picked the clang from xcode and now pyenv works again.

Sorry, still no idea why, but I just tried and it's working for me (terminal output below). I'm running Mac OS Big Sur, version 11.5.2 with an Intel i7 processor. My pyenv version is also the latest (2.1.0)

$ pyenv install 3.10.0
python-build: use openssl@1.1 from homebrew
python-build: use readline from homebrew
Downloading Python-3.10.0.tar.xz...
-> https://www.python.org/ftp/python/3.10.0/Python-3.10.0.tar.xz
Installing Python-3.10.0...
python-build: use tcl-tk from homebrew
python-build: use readline from homebrew
python-build: use zlib from xcode sdk
Installed Python-3.10.0 to /Users/myuser/.pyenv/versions/3.10.0

Before this I did:

brew update && brew upgrade pyenv

Try this:

sudo rm -rf /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools
sudo xcode-select --install

It worked for me!

For anyone still facing this issue. This worked for me

cd ~/.pyenv/plugins/python-build && git pull

I had a similar issue, which was resolved by setting the $CC environment variable to clang.

Try env ARCHFLAGS="-arch x86_64"

(that works for me for other Python-related tools, I don't use pyenv myself).

Rationale: modern macOS supports 2 architectures: intel (x86_64) and m1 (arm-something). Compiling for only one architecture is easier.
