I am trying to create a GUI with JavaFX/JavaFXML. To get started, I am following a tutorial: https://code.makery.ch/library/javafx-tutorial/part1

When I try to execute the code, an exception is thrown in the start function.

Exception in Application start method

I tried to move the fxml files and the MainApplication.java file in the same package, still the same exception. Also there are no errors in the fxml files which could cause the exception. Here is the code of my MainApplication:

public class MainApp extends Application {

    private Stage primaryStage;
    private BorderPane rootLayout;

    @Override
    public void start(Stage primaryStage) {
        this.primaryStage = primaryStage;
        this.primaryStage.setTitle("AddressApp");

        initRootLayout();

        showPersonOverview();
    }

    /**
     * Initializes the root layout.
     */
    public void initRootLayout() {
        try {
            // Load root layout from fxml file.
            FXMLLoader loader = new FXMLLoader();
            loader.setLocation(MainApp.class.getResource("Controller/RootLayout.fxml"));
            rootLayout = (BorderPane) loader.load();

            // Show the scene containing the root layout.
            Scene scene = new Scene(rootLayout);
            primaryStage.setScene(scene);
            primaryStage.show();
        } catch (IOException e) {
            e.printStackTrace();
        }
    }

    /**
     * Shows the person overview inside the root layout.
     */
    public void showPersonOverview() {
        try {
            // Load person overview.
            FXMLLoader loader = new FXMLLoader();
            loader.setLocation(MainApp.class.getResource("Controller/AccountView.fxml"));
            AnchorPane personOverview = (AnchorPane) loader.load();

            // Set person overview into the center of root layout.
            rootLayout.setCenter(personOverview);
        } catch (IOException e) {
            e.printStackTrace();
        }
    }

    /**
     * Returns the main stage.
     * @return
     */
    public Stage getPrimaryStage() {
        return primaryStage;
    }

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        launch(args);
    }
}

Any ideas? kind regards

  • When following a tutorial, follow the tutorial, at least initially and especially if you have an issue. The tutorial states exactly what package names to use. Don't change names or code from what the tutorial provides until you at least have your program working as expected in the tutorial. – jewelsea Dec 20 '21 at 19:30
