Google Apps Script: Display log messages on Google Sheet

I am running a fairly long script on a Google Sheet via a custom menu item. Currently, all it says is "Running script" on the sheet. But I would like some informative logger messages to show up on the Sheet itself so that the user knows where in the execution we are.

Is that possible?

Just to be clear I do not want the messages to come up in the cells of the sheet as was suggested for this post.
