If `HEAD` is not a commit, you have no commits at all yet. You will need to make some. (You might be in "orphan branch" mode, where some commits exist, but that's somewhat unlikely—you have to do this on purpose—and if you *did* do it on purpose, "create some commit(s)" is still the correct next step.) – torek Oct 15 '22 at 00:04
