I try upgrading PIP in python with this code and get the following result:

root@vps44007 [~]# python -m pip install --upgrade pip
Collecting pip
  Using cached https://files.pythonhosted.org/packages/a3/50/c4d2727b99052780aad92c7297465af5fe6eec2dbae490aa9763273ffdc1/pip-22.3.1.tar.gz
Complete output from command python setup.py egg_info:
    Traceback (most recent call last):
      File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
      File "/tmp/pip-build-pyTxHv/pip/setup.py", line 7
        def read(rel_path: str) -> str:
                         ^
    SyntaxError: invalid syntax

Command "python setup.py egg_info" failed with error code 1 in /tmp/pip-build-pyTxHv/pip/
You are using pip version 8.1.2, however version 22.3.1 is available.
You should consider upgrading via the 'pip install --upgrade pip' command.

I get the same issue when I try to upgrade setuptools:

root@vps44007 [~]# pip install --upgrade setuptools

      File "_distutils_hack/__init__.py", line 194
        f'spec_for_{name}',
                         ^
    SyntaxError: invalid syntax

    ----------------------------------------
Command "python setup.py egg_info" failed with error code 1 in /tmp/pip-build-4jQ8jC/setuptools/
You are using pip version 8.1.2, however version 22.3.1 is available.
You should consider upgrading via the 'pip install --upgrade pip' command.

I also get an error trying pip install unroll

It seems like you're using a very very old version of both Python and Pip. I would guess that `python` on your system still refers to Python 2, which has been at end-of-life status since 2020, or possibly an old and unsupported version of Python 3. What OS are you using and how did you install Python? Note that you also should definitely not be running `pip install` as root. – shadowtalker Nov 19 '22 at 01:32
